Hi all,

Basically im just wondering what possibly could be causing myself to be getting heartburn at least 3-4 times a day. I seem to get it all the time and i've noticed it getting worse over the past few months.

It tends to be worse at night but on some days i can have it around 10 times a day. I seem to be living on antacid tablets at the moment but cant seem to understand why.

My diet hasn't changed that much and my alcohol intake hasn't increased by alot over the past few months.

Any ideas on what could be causing this?

Thanks,

Sounds like "acid reflux" problem or what is knows as GERD. Best to get it checked out in order to prevent further damage to the esophagus.

I agree.. some people develop it as a side effect from meds.. or from another illness.. but for many it starts out of nowhere. I've been battling it for more than 4 years now. Instead of antacids, try taking the OTC med Prilosec once a day. That should help more than the antacids (it does take a few days to take full effect so keep the antacids handy when you're starting the Prilosec.. you can take both). Also contact your doctor though so they can rule out anything else.

I agree that you should try some OTC antacid pills. I have had the same problem as you are having and get it a lot less on zantac. I told my doctor about it and she explained to me that as long as the zantac was working just keep taking it because if she ran some tests she would have ended up putting me on something like that anyway. I also take a couple of Tums at night if necessary.

Thanks all,

I read up about 'GERD' and it sounds like that's the problem. It says alot of people have asthma or lung pains as a symptom of it. I seem to get quite strange lung pains, which are really hard to describe.. seems like theres too much air in my lungs and it has to 'deflate'.. like i said, very strange, but ill definately see my doctore over it all.

Thanks again all,

Hi there,
go see your doc he can give some meds to help heal that.

It can be worse if you lay down b/c of obvious reasons. Also, what you eat can trigger it. Chocolate, soda, spicey foods, etc. I know for me a big trigger is soda. :-(

Yeah, well i mean my diet hasn't changed alot really, if anything i eat alot more veg and fruit than before. I am a BIG ketchup fan and put it on alot of stuff which i know is high in acidy substances.

I will go to see the doc as soon as i can, although its a bit hard for me because the practice is an hour away and i dont have a car!

Does anyone know if its treatable? Or am i going to be on Antacid tablets and prescription tablets for the rest of my life? :(

NEXIUM (A rx) will help heal the esphogal tissue- it takes about 8 weeks. From what I read some say it can be healed others say you'll always have it.

Try to keep a food diary for a little while, note what you eat, then write when you had some reflux or heartburn. Hopefully this can help your sort through things.
Also, stress/worry can play a big part in it.
Do taking tums help at all? I would try to buy a little pill over the counter and see if that works better until you see your doc. YOu should probably get it check as soon as possible as all that acid coming up isn't the best thing for you. IF its happening that frequently it could be pretty bad.

good luck
