Hi,

I had posted on here over a week ago in the arthritis section but no one had answered back.

My husband has had pain in his shoulder over 2 weeks ago now and still won't go away. I have rubbed Aspercream on this, I have put pain patches, heating pad and nothing. The pain is still there.

My husband moves furniture and alot of heavy items and this is our busy season where we work so he hasn't had alot of down time and we can't just take off work because it is family owned.

Anyway when I do rub his shoulder I can feel a knot back there but he seems to think that it is bursitis, because he says that it is a sharp stabbing pain. I know that it is not a rotator cuff tear because he can move his shoulder in a free range all the way around, and he can lift his arm above his head.

Is there something that I can do, some kind of miracle pill or anything?

My husband has to move furniture today for an auction and I was hoping that last night that I got the pain rubbed out somewhat but I don't know if it is still hurting as he is still sleeping.

Thanks for helping me............

My wife and I have assorted aches and pains in our joints and muscles; we find Aleve gives us great relief; be sure to read the directions very carefully. Hope he gets some help!!

Maybe he could go to the doc and have fluid removed (via needle) from the lump. It may have calcified too much and the pain may last awhile, but this sounds recent so i would suggest stretching and massage. He may have sharp pain due to a nerve that may be pinched in the lump.

Anti-inflammatories, such as asprin, may help. Tylenol and other acetaminophen will probably serve no point. Aleve is Naproxen so it is the best for killing pain (OTC)

I wouldnt waste time with hot/cold packs or Aspercream (it's basically just asprin - Methyl salicylate- that your rubbing on the skin that will eventually be broken down in the liver just like taking an asprin by mouth.)

Hi all,

It was damp here yesterday and the day before and my husband had complained how bad is shoulder is.

So I told him that I would call our doctor today and make an appt. well he told me no and said that if I make an appt that he will just cancel it because he is too busy. I got really mad because he just keeps complaining about it.

Do you think the next time he says something about it I should tell him "Unless you are going to go to the doctor, don't complain to me"? He is stubborn just like his father.

I don't want his shoulder to get so bad that he can't use it.

When he moves his shoulder it makes a grinding to a clicking noise.

Can anyone tell me what you think?

Thanks

Sounds arthritic. I'm sure a doctor will be able to help him. Hang in there. (give your husband a lot of hugs) ;)

Six years ago my husband was complaining of a sore shoulder. I put a heating pad on it, Ben-gay, aspirin, etc....nothing helped. It spread into his neck a few days later. More aspirin and heat packs. The pain persisted, yet he insisted we still go on our vacation. Not until we were 10,000 ft up did the pain get so bad he thought he'd pass out. Turns out there was an EMT sitting across from us, and told me he thought my husband was having a heart attack. He was right.

The aspirin I kept feeding him the week before kept him from going into cardiac arrest. He's fine now, but we both get concerned when he gets a sore shoulder or stiff neck. "Chest pains" caused by heart attacks aren't always in the chest. Don't rule out a heart problem until the doctor does.

He could very possibly have a rotator cuff tear, esp if he does manual labor and lifts heavy objects. It is best to have it checked out by an orthopedic surgeon or sports medicine doctor.

Hi

Your husband should really see a doctor as shoulder pain is very common with gallbadder problems. And sometimes people may not know they have gallbladder issues.
Therefore alot of people treat the shoulder pain not realising that it is the gall bladder.

If it isnt his gallbladder he could have frozen shoulder, best way to check for this is have him stand near a wall, outstretch his arm so the flat of his palm is on the wall, then ask him to walk his arm up the wall using his fingers (almost like a finger stepping motion) ask him to do it till he feels the pain or some discomfort, if he feels pain or discomfort then it could be a frozen shoulder.

But!!!! :) he needs to got docs to get it checked out anyway

My husband has the same thing and does a lot of physical work. He is 55. It got so bad he finally went to the dr. He is on a prescription Naproxen which has helped tremendously to relieve the pain, and it is rheumatoid arthritis. My husband is stubborn too, but when it gets bad enough, then he will do something. His parents had 12 children and they only went to the dr if it was an absolute emergency. Hope this helps

if it is bursitis, the doc can give him a cortizone shot. i have had this myself and the shot helped me a great deal. if he gets this, he needs to be careful for a week so not to injure the shoulder thinking he is in no pain.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for all of your posts and your help.

I got my husband a doctor appt for April 26th, I know it is far away, but this doctor is one of the best Orthopedic doctors in our tri county area. So hopefully he can tell us what is wrong.

My husband has literally been in tears these past couple of days, I heated up a gel pack that stays warm and applied that to my husband and that doesn't work, the heating pad isn't even touching the pain anymore, as before it would help a little.

He asked me today to pull the knife out of his back. I really feel bad.

He told me that it is to the point now that when he works that arm alot his whole right arm has like no energy all the way down to his hand, like it has collapsed.

He won't even let me massage it anymore more than 3 minutes because it hurts so bad.

I keep hugging him and try to make him feel better but he keeps thinking about this shot if he has to get it if he has bursitis. His mother keeps telling him that the shot hurts really bad.

My father in law has had burstitis in his shoulder years ago and rheumatoid arthritis and all kinds of arthritis runs in his mothers side of the family, she has it, really bad in her basal joint in her thumb.

That is why we don't want children, because arthritis runs in my family too, we don't want to have a defective child.

Thanks,

I will let you all know how his doctors appointment goes.

if he is in this much pain, i would call the dr back to see if they can get him in right away. if not, go to the ER. he shouldn't have to be in that much pain until the end of the month. he needs help with this now.
good luck

I never believed in chiropractic before, but it has helped me immensely. My husband gets knots in his upper back (near the shoulders or shoulder blade) and I convinced him to try my chiropractor, and he is a firm believer now! It could be arthritic, or it could be from spinal subluxation. Spinal subluxation just means the vertebrae (one or more than one) could be out of alignment, or locked up (mine get locked up if I cradle the phone in my shoulder!). All muscles and ligaments are connected to the spine..so if the spine is out of whack, it can affect ANY part of your body!

Your husband doesn't sound like he would go for it, though...and the fact that he moves furniture says to me he is a PRIME CANDIDATE for chiropractic care!

My chiro. had me get xrays, and she then actually showed me the disc damage and bone spurs I was growing (my body's attempt to correct the problem). So I know she's not a quack!

Good luck trying to convince him! I'd like to know how it turns out!

Hi all,

Well, I tried to get another appt. with 3 other doctors and they were all booked up til May, so looks like the appt will still have to be April 26th.

My husband said that the pain isn't bad enough to go to the emergency room, I had asked him on a scale 1 - 10 as to how bad the pain was and he told me 7.5, so it hurts but he says that he can deal with it. It is 2 weeks away and he told me that he has dealt with it over 2 months so he can deal with it another 2 weeks.

As to chiropractors, they are out of the question, our insurance won't pay, which is Blue Cross, they said that only a real doctor they will cover. Plus we know 3 people that have walked away from Chiropractors because they have messed them up.

I would rather him go to a Medical professional, not a quack.

But thanks for all of the wonderful posts.

Now I am worrying about my mother in law because she is in extreme pain with all of her arthritis, she can't even move her arms without being in pain.

I always thought that I had it bad with kidney stones, well now I feel that kidney stones are nothing compared to what they are going through.

Well another day and the faster the days go by the faster we get this over with and taken care of.

Thanks..........

Hi everyone,

Well, tomorrow is the day that my dh goes to the doctor, I am happy as so is he.

The last couple of days he hasn't been able to cut his toenails, or shave, so I have been playing nurse and mommy, and it really feels good for me to be needed, but I feel bad with all of the discomfort that he is in.

My mother in law just got 2 shots in her hand for her arthritis, her doctor told her that it is bone rubbing against bone. She got the shots yesterday and today she said that she was feeling alot better.

I just hope whatever is wrong with my husband that it is not that serious. We all think it must be bursitis because his father has had it.

Anyway, I am so happy that tomorrow he will be seeing the doc.

Thanks

I am sure this post won't do anything now since your dr. apt is for tomorrow. It's really hard to diagnosis without the proper equipment such as X-rays. There are a number of things that could cause shoulder pain. Although, because of his line of work it sounds like something caused by injury from heavy lifting. Bursitis can be caused by the slightest lifting, even lifting groceries into a car could do that. Bursitis can be treated with ice compresses not heat. Anti-inflammatory medications such as aspirin could help. It could be anything. Here are a list of conditions that can cause shoulder pain: Bursitis or Rotator Cuff Tendonitis, Rotator Cuff Tear, Frozen Shoulder, calcific tendonitis, shoulder instability, shoulder dislocation, shoulder separation, labral tear, SLAP lesion, Arthritis, or Biceps Tendon Rupture. Therefore, the best solution is to see the doctor which it seems you're making that step so good thinking. Hang in there and try to be patient with him, remember he's in pain, he doesn't mean to be annoying. Good Luck!

Hi everyone,

Well just got home a little while ago and found out some better news than we were looking for.

My husband has nothing wrong with his bones. He has tendonitis, so the doctor told him to ice it, as he has been doing and to take some tylenol 3 that he wrote a prescription for but my husband will not take it because it constipates him really bad.

So basically we do the same as we have been, my husband will keep icing the area and he will take his aleve, unless someone here has a better solution. I think he should take the tylenol 3 but he told me he would rather live through the pain in his shoulder than be backed up down there.

We went to the best doctor around too, he is very well known throughout our tri county.

I wish there was something else I could do for him but there really isn't.

Thanks for all of your wishes, I hope he gets better.

Tell him to try this for a day to help with constipation and take the tylenol 3. To help to get his bowels moving he should increase his fiber intake with an addition of bran foods and drink plenty of fluids. Exercise/Increase Ambulation (even as simple as walking) will help to propel the colon contents so that is something he may want to try.
