I was recently diagnosed with PCOS and one of the problems with it is elevated insulin levels. Now my doctor has put me on Metformin to control the levels (taking it three times a day) and in all honesty it has killed my appetite. Has anyone had problems with being on Metformin? Also, the strange thing is I was diagnosed with Hypoglycemia seven years ago and the doctor explained to me that I may be at risk for it turning into diabetes. Am I becoming Diabetic? It runs in my family, so I really concerned.

It's possible you may become diabetic, but there are no guarantees. Your family history, in addition to your PCOS diagnosis would indicate a higher probability, though. Elevated insulin levels could indicate you have some insulin resistence going on causing the over-production of insulin. Over time, the over-production can wear out the beta cells in your pancreas causing them to die off, making it difficult at best to maintain a proper blood sugar level. When enough beta cells die off to make it impossible to maintain proper blood sugar levels, usually a fasting level of 126 mg/dl or higher, you are diagnosed with Type II Diabetes. My cousin has PCOS and it's amazing how many similarities there are to my type II Diabetes. I take metformin and so does she. It made her appetite subside significantly, but no such luck with me. If your decreased appetite is inappropriate for you because you are not overweight, I would discuss it with your Doctor.

This might seem confusing but here it goes I have type 2 diabeties diagnosed last year. Taken Metformin 500mg 3x a day. Had a child 12 yrs ago with the help of clomid. Never had any more children, never used protection married 16 yrs. I am now 14 weeks pregnant. My OBGYN says I must have has PCOS and Metformin will fix the problem. Thats why I am Pregnant. I am Very Happy about it But I thought I'd let you know if you are still in the child bearing age or if you've taken a while to concieve if you have children. Metformin with PCOS promotes pregnancy. Just thought I'd let you know.
I also had Hypo long before I had HYper Good Luck

Hello Jenny!

I have PCOS also. I have been on metaformin 500 mg 2x a day and lost 10lbs and had some energy and then when I got off it....I gain it all back and have no energy. I just didn't like how they are horse pills....lol. I have noticed that I am so tired, weak, always thirsty (I can almost drink a gallon of water when I get off work), and I get up numerous times to use the restroom. I have an increased hunger, but then sometimes I don't feel like eating. I have a nodule on the right side of my thyroid, but all my tests have come out normal according to the doctor. :D I am asthmatic....I take singulair, advair, and albuetrol inhaler, and also on yasmin 28.

Thanks,

Cindy
