The root canals I have had have not ever hurt. The only pain I had was in my TMJ, because of having my mouth open for so long. Not something you want to go through, but it really isnt all that bad.

My root canal wasn't that bad at all either. As long as they numb you up good, you shouldn't feel anything. The worst part is keeping your mouth open for so long. Best wishes to you!

I don't understand why he cannot pull it, yes you would need an oral surgeon but I would think it could still be pulled. I had a tooth where its root was wrapped around my wisdom tooth, yet they were still able to extract it.

Root canal operations typically take three appointments. 1/ File out the nerve and take an x-ray. 2/ Remove any remaining nerve. 3/ Fill the canal and seal it.
The operation itself isn't painful and if it goes well, which I guess it does in most cases you should be comfortable in a week or so. My sister and mother have had root canals and got over them in a few days.
As to whether it's safer or less safe than extracting a tooth, I really don't know. The root canal operation on a front tooth 4 months ago, has damaged my nervous system. But the outcome might have been identical if I'd had an extraction.
I don't want to frighten you, this is most likely a very uncommon reaction, I'm just saying there are no certainties with operations.

Ive had 2 root canals in the past, and would never have another one..If it was not noticeable I would have the extraction....The root canals were time consuming, the first one was painful as I didnt have enough novacaine...After I had them done I was in alot of pain for 3 days, and both ended up getting infected..Plus I had to have a crown and this was years ago, but each one cost me over $ 500 then, and I know now they are more like $800 to 1,000 each....I had a back molar extracted last year by an oral surgeon cos I refused to get another root canal, and it was a cakewalk...Got the IV sedation, the tooth was out before I knew it, and the pain and recovery time and expense was much less....Extracting the tooth would have only been $75 but since I got the IV sedation it was $ 300 but well worth it..Its really up to you but thats just my experience with root canals
