So I have a cyst on my right ovary. It's at least the size of a golf ball. And it's started to cause me some pain, and my doctor is having me go in for an ultrasound, and also a consultation with a GYN about having it removed. My question is this: Is having it removed an invasive procedure? How long would I be out from work?
I ask this because I had my Gallbladder removed last august, and I had all sorts of complications and was in and out of the hospital four times over the course of a month. I missed a lot of work, they were very understanding, but I also don't want to have to miss a lot of work again.
Is there anyone that has had a cyst removed that would be comfortable telling me about the procedure. What it involves? How invasive it is? How long you were laid up? That type of thing. Any information you can give me will be helpful. Thanks in advance. :)

I have never had a cyst removed. I read in Dr. John Lee's book called "What your doctor may not tell you about premenopause" that you can do things yourself to get your ovarian cysts to go away. Something about balancing your hormones. You may want to check this book out of the library and see if it might help you avoid surgery.

Is this something for older women? Because I'm only 28. Though it's a thought. I will have to check it out. Thanks. :)

I was going to have one removed. I was actually in the hopital (5.5 cm) when it ruptured :(. Sad. But they were going to remove mine as a lap. It was outpatient, so I would be in the hospital for the prep, the surgury, and the short recovery (while you wake up) they said 6 -8 hours. They also told me to plan to do nothing for 2-4 weeks. (2 months if they had to remove my ovary-only because it was so large, i doubt that for you.) I had only taken 2 off of work, and figured on doing half days for the other two, depending on how I felt. They make 2 incisions. They fill your abdomin with CO2 then they make 2 cuts one for the CO2, and the other for the laparoscopy. One is on or near(under) the belly button and the other is around your abdomin, they said about 5-10 mm long each one. Then they will 'suck out' the cyst. You can do a internet search, so much will come up, you may have to look at a few before it gives you details. I'd give you a link, but it would just be editied! :) Did I help? Hope so, hope things go well. oh i also planned mine on a thursday, so i wouldnt miss as much work.

you helped a lot, but didn't make me feel very good. i had my gall bladder removed by lap, and it was a HORRIBLE experience.
and my cyst was 6cm 5 months ago. who knows how big it is now. i'll find out after the ultrasound on thursday.
and please oh please, i hope to God they don't have to remove my ovary. my husband and i are planning on having children in a year and a half or so. the last thing i need is to make it harder for me to get pregnant.

hi there, i had an ovarian cyst removed when i was 14, it was larger than a tennis ball and had become entwined around my fallopian tube so i also had to have all that removed too, i remember being laid up for a couple of days as it was a big operation, but after a couple of days there was no stopping me all the nurses told me i had to take it easy but i felt absolutley fine!! i dont know whether i felt great after the operation because of my age......
i hope this helps!!

I highly doubt they will remove it... It has to be wrapped pretty good around your ovary. The doctor would have told you if he thought it would need to be removed. That is something they will prepare you for. However, you should be prepared wiht your husband, incase he needs to make a decision when you are under. Really, honestly, the odds of removing your ovary are slim. Out of all the laps they do, the horror stories of removing the ovary are barely any. Ususally they are solid masses, and if yours was that big and solid you would have had it removed already.
I'm sorry I scared you! I hope you are doing alright.

Dr. John Lee's book discusses how our hormonal imbalances can cause all sorts of female problems and how we can help alleviate them ourselves through diet, exercise, supplements, etc. If you are worried that you may be operated on, what harm can checking this book out at the library do? I read in the book where doing Dr. Lee's suggestions over many weeks made cysts disappear. He doesn't sell any products, so it is not like he is trying to make money off of you.
Whatever you decide to do, I hope you are cyst and pain free soon. :)

So I just got back from my appointments. Didn't go as I had hoped.
Looks like it has grown. The cyst is 6x8cm, and my ovary is swollen to almost the same size.
The doctor says that I have to have it removed, and there is a good chance that he will not be able to save my ovary. :( But he says that it won't cause too much trouble with fertility. So that is good. :)
He said the sooner I have it out the better my chances are that they will be able to save my ovary. So it is looking like I will be having surgery within the next month. He is hopefull that he will be able to do it by lap, but there is always a possiblity that he will have to do a bikini cut.
Wish me luck.
On a side note, I was just expecting to get a plain old ultrasound and a consultation today. I wasn't expecting all sorts of stuff to be put in my vagina. Poor hubby, my vagina has seen enough action today. :D

Seriphina,
Good luck with your surgery. I had an ovarian cyst removed over the summer, it was a little bigger than yours, and my ovary was twisted around itself three times because of it. They weren;'t sure if they were going to be able to save the ovary or do the surgery laparoscopically, but they actually were able to, and they were abe to save my ovary too. It wasn't a big deal at all. I went home on the same day.
Let us know how it goes.

Hi! I had the same exact thing a few years ago, except mine was the size of a basketball. It was HUGE. I was 17 when it happened.
As for whether it's an invasive surgery--it kind of is, depending on how your doctor plans to remove it. Mine was drained, then removed along with my right ovary. It was benign, so that was pretty much that.
Since it was my first surgery I have nothing to compare it to, all I know is that it probably wasn't as bad as it could have been. Since yours is so small, your scar will probably be from your bellybutton down your cervix a couple of inches. I was laid up in the hospital for only 4 days, but after I got out I stayed out of school for a whole 2 months to recooperate, but I'm a complete wuss and can't function without my body in perfect order. Since you've had a surgery before and seem to be a perfectly capable human being unlike myself, your recovery time will probably be 2 weeks or so.
I don't know if you know this, so I don't want you to be scared if it does happen, but your wound will probably open to let out infection. It scared the living daylights out of me, so I just wanna tell you so that if it happens you don't get scared you're dying like I did! LOL.
That's pretty much all I can tell you, since that's pretty much where it stopped for me because the tumor was benign.

Hi! I had a large cyst removed in 2001 - the doctor measured it at 13kg (about 30 pounds). Apparently it was the 2nd largest he's dealt with - and it was all twisted around and cutting off the blood to my ovary.....which explains the excruciating pain that I'd had for 6 weeks! I was opened up from just below my belly button to just above my pubic bone. I had some strong painkillers after the surgery but they worked pretty well and, after the first 12 hours or so the pain was almost non-existant. I had an active job so I needed 3 months off work - it will probably be less if your job isn't so active. I had some problems after the surgery but other than those (infection and not making any urine.....rare problems I must add) the recovery was fine. If you have any questions just ask me!!
Good luck - and I'll be thinking of you

I had a softball size cyst removed and my ovary.
Even with only one ovary I ended up having 3 kids in 2 1/2 yrs. Meanwhile before the removal I couldn't get pregnant.

Try and relax. I also had a cyst the size of a golf ball. Mine also ruptured so they decided not to do the laperscopy because I was getting my period. Aren't they supposed to flush with your menstral cycle? Thats what mine do. Its seems as soon as I get my period my cysts go away. I heard it was a very easy procedure so Im sure you will be fine. Most of the time they do not have to remove the ovary unless they really have to especially if your young and have not had children yet. Good luck and keep us updated.

My ovary was removed because the cyst was so large it was impossible to separate, plus it had twisted my fallopian tube and the lack of blood supply had caused too much damage. Despite losing an ovary, my fertility would have been unaffected apparently. I still get periods like before too (less painful though!). All in all, mine was big surgery but the recovery period wasn't physically too traumatic.
