View Full Version : dehydration symptoms but not dehydrated??

A friend called this morning concerned about her 3 year old daughter. Says that her lips are bluish, fingers cold, when you press her skin it takes too long to "pink up" (takes 30 second or so to go back to normal). I was thinking poor circulation or low oxygen, but how does that explain the "pink-up" issue? That seems more like dehydration? But the child is not sick, no flu, no cold. What sorts of things could cause this?

I did encourage her to take her daughter to see a doctor. I'm sure she is doing that by now, but I can't stop thinking about this.

If she couldn't get her into the dr, I hope she was able to get her to the hospital. It's probably nothing, but like I say, always better safe than sorry. Please keep us posted.

Does she have asthma? Could be that, a heart defect, or maybe she was just very cold? Kids get like that a lot in pools when they get really chilled and won't get out. I know she wasn't in a pool, but maybe where you are it's cold (??) and the house wasn't heated good enough.

if this childs lips are actually blue and her capillary refill is that slow(when you press on the skin or the nail bed,it should realistically,in any healthy person, almost instantly pink back up,i am talking a couple seconds anything longer than 3 seconds would be considered to be abnormal.she is wayyy past that)she is having some sort of a major circulation problem that needs very definite evaluation asap.something is preventing the o2 in her body from exchanging properly with the co2.Her o2 saturation would be very very low which could cause her some major problems with just about every possible body system, including respiratory and the brain as they are not getting the proper oxygenation right now.

Honestly, she does need to get this child to either her doc or an ER asap.hopefully she is already doing that, but i would call her to make darn sure she is actually doing it.this does need very prompt attention.hopefully the reason for this can be sorted out soon.but I would call her mother to make sure this child gets seen as soon as she can get her to the doc or er.Something is definitely not right with her.i hope things are not majorly serious but please let us know what you find out,K? I agree with the other posters, that this child may have poor circulation or a heart defect. She may also have a lung disorder or possibly a lung infection that could be causing her symptoms.

Thanks everyone. I did try to call her yesterday but no answer. I've got my fingers and toes crossed that it means she took her daughter in to be seen. I will try contacting her again today. I will stay on it! Honestly. And yes, I will definately come back and fill you in on what's going on.

I just saw my friend this morning and apparently "It went away and she's fine."

Hopefully it was that she was just a bit cold yesterday morning? Although she was in the main area of the house all morning where it is normal room temperature and everyone else was warm.

Just one of those odd things I guess!

Hi,
My daughter gets like that, she has a heart condition, it's nothing to mess with, she needs to go to a medical facility today.

WOW, thanks.

I'm glad I came back to check on this thread. I'll definately let my friend know about this that it can "go away" but still be an indicator of a problem.

the above poster IS right, she still needs attention here, really.this just is not a NORMAL thing to have happen and there fore needs evaluation.achild that has any body surface turn blue with a very delayed cap refill needs to have this evaluated and soon.there are specific non invasive tests they need to do on her to make sure all body systems are functioning properly.

if this childs mother will not take her duaghter in to be seen, she may be dealing with a bit of denial that there is anything wrong.as long as she can explain it away, this will continue.this child needs attention.Something is definitely not right within her circulatory system that needs to be found out as it could lead to many many problems in many different areas down the road.this is definitely something this mother does not want to be suddenly "suprised" by,trust me.

I do think you may want to speak with her about at the very least, taking her in to see her ped doc just to have all the symptoms and her, evaluated. This could "present" itself again but in a more dramatic way.who wants to put their child thru something like that?something IS causing this, its pretty simple as this does not just happen to a child.anything that is not the norm in our children does need to be looked into a bit further.maybe you could go with the mother and her daughter to the appt, just for support? It may help her to know that you are there for her no matter what.i am sure she is a bit scared after seing her child looking the way she was.

no one ever expects their child to be one of those 'you hear about",you know what I mean/my son at age 12,who we thought was a normal happy healthy kid, ended up just out of the blue one day, just start vomiting up blood at school.up til this point,he honestly never seemed sick at all.by the end of the week,we found out the following.he had some form of liver disease that had actually been destroying his liver since before he was even born(it just never showed itself)this came from a mutated gene caused by polycystic kidney disease.he was also by this time, only down to having about 20% of his actual liver still functioning, and would need a liver transplant at some point very soon.wow.we were stunned.the thing is,we all of the sudden had "one of those kids you hear about".we never ever expected that we would be ever dealing with something this dramatic espescially with one of our kids.the thing is,this kind of thing does happen. You hinestly just do not know just what in the heck is going on inside anyone til things are teasted and looked into a bit more in depth.

what this child has may be some simple thing that can be taken care of easily or it could be the indicator of a much bigger problem.she IS definitely showing signs of something that needs further evaluation.time,in these types of circumstances, could make a difference.please really encourage this mother to take the child in just to be sure.it may have been just a fluke type thing and will never show up again, but then again, you just don't know.thats why she needs to be checked out.

i do hope she will just take her in just to be safe.please keep us up to date on what she decides to do here.I do hope you can convince her.Good luck,FB
