Do you think this is related to gerd? I will be sitting down not eating or drinking then I cant breath and start to choke. It soon passes after standing up and raising my arms but its the scarest thing I ever had happen to me.

I've gotten that choking sensation for several years now. At first it would scare me to death but now I realize what it is. I reflux. At first I didn't think that's what it was because I didn't realize any sensation of something coming back up but actually it does. It doesn't burn or make a bad taste in my mouth. My doctor used to tell me never to lay down right after I'd eaten or drank something so I don't. Now I realize that this can happen even if I haven't just eaten or drank anything and even if I'm sitting upright. Most of the time it happens while I'm either napping or just plain-ole relaxed. It's a very scarey feeling. I'm on Aciphex and I was hoping that would help this sensation but it hasn't. It doesn't happen often but I'm afraid that sometime when I'm choking like that I could suffer some type of damage or even worse a stroke.

I thought that I was just weird>lol...but now I know that others have this also. I can be sitting, driving etc and all of sudden I choke and turn purple and finally when I am able to relax I take a deep breath and it goes away..I have been on all the stomach meds out there and nothing stops this and I have found that the ONLY thing that helps my indigestion at all is Aciphex...I was talking 20mgs a day, but I can't afford it anymore, so I have to eat gaviscon extra strength when I feel like I am going to have indigestion...they help tremendously, a good replacement for Aciphex! I took it either on an empty stomach/or full and it did not bother me at all, I didn't even know I was taking it except for the fact that it really does work very well for my gerd/indigestion/gas etc. I find now, EVERYTHING I eat or drink causes me to get ungodly gas, not even beano works for my gas, does anyone have this problem? I mean, mine gets so bad, I worry about having a heart attack even though I have no clue as to what one feels like, I get so much pressure in my chest it worries me, I usually take a couple extra strength gaviscon and relax and most of it goes away, I have never been one who can burp alot, its most gas from the other end, super bad at times...its very embarrasing, but what can I do, if I hold it in, it gives me super stomach cramps...Any reply's will be greatly appreciated.

I'm so glad I came to this board and read this post. I have been choking lately too on nothing. It wakes me up in the middle of the night sometimes, and other times when I am laying down relaxing, but recently it happened while I was sitting up too. My doc ordered an esophageal swallowing study to see if it was GERD, but I was positive he was an idiot since GERD seems to be the new buzz word with doctors lately. Now I'm wondering if he really did know what he was talking about. I guess I'll find out later this week during the study.
