let me briefly tell my situation, early august '05 i got off methadone cold turkey followed by a diabetic coma(3days) in september '05 which is when I was diagnosed with diabetes. First few months out of the hospital, I had a problem with hypoglycemia which now seems to no longer be an issue. At this point I'm on 4units of lantus, my sugar in morning is usually around 100, 2hours or so after eating it's around 140-180, 5hours after eating its in the 115 range. is this considered good control for a T1?

Your fasting blood sugar level is good. But you have a big spike after breakfast. And it is taking your pancreas 5 hours to bring your blood sugar down again. This is not good because it is stressing your remaining beta cells. By injecting Humalog/Novolog before breakfast now rather than waiting until you don't have an option, you should be able to prolong your honeymoon period.

Your other option is to reduce the carbs you are eating for breakfast. This would reduce the size of the spike. But you will in anycase have to start injecting before meals. And the sooner you get started with it, the better.

Cheers,

Mark
