It can be a little difficult to find nutritious cereals at the grocery store. There are so many different kinds to pick from, but several of the kinds seem to be loaded with sugar and other junk.
Is it true that if the first two to three ingredients or so on the label include sugar, then the cereal most likely has a lot of sugar in it? Also, some cereals have a lot of iron in it, sometimes added to it. I don't need any extra iron at all.
I was thinking about getting an oats type of cereal. I know what the commercials say about Cheerios being good for you and all, but is it really a healthy cereal? I recently got Bob's Red Mill Rolled Oats cereal. The cereal is just rolled oats, with no other ingredients added at all. I like it, but it's a little dry, and could use a little more taste. So I add a little soy milk or other type of milk to it like rice milk. Has anyone tried Bob's Red Mill's cereals before? Which nutritious cereals do you recommend?

Why not just get oats? You can make porridge out of it, or if you can't be bothered to do that (like me), you can just blend it up with some milk (also like me).

just a quick note on "dryness." you do realize that ALL cereals are gonna be dry if you try to eat them without milk or yogurt, right? (they're meant to be eaten with milk, look at the picture on the box!) so if you like it with a little milk, then stick with it ... that's the way you should be eating it!

Breakfast cereals are truly my favorite foods! As a kid, I could sit and eat an entire box of Capn Crunch (I don't do that anymore!). Now-a-days, I stick with the more healthful types and my 3 golden rules for a healthful ready-to-eat breakfast cereal are: 1) 6 grams or less of sugar per serving; 2) whole grain as primary ingredient; and 3) fortified with at least 5 or 6 vitamins and minerals (must include iron and B12) and at least 25-30% RDA for each. My top picks are: Cheerios, Wheaties, Total and the new *****-brand cereals, like Heart to Heart.
Read the nutrition label and disregard all the marketing ploys of the front of the box. For instance, "Low fat" is worthless information because all breakfast cereals are low fat! As a matter of fact, a brand of granola cereal has "LOW FAT" boldly printed in the front and lo and behold, it contained 3 times as much fat as the usual cereals, like Cheerios.

I can't believe that nobody has mentioned the cereals made by *****!!! They are organic and loaded with fiber. I like the ***** Go Lean Crunch....it is naturally sweetened and has alot of fiber. If you don't want so much sweetness you can mix it with another cereal like Good Friends. I also like the cereals made by Nature's Path....they are also organic and extremely healthy. My favorite of theirs is the Optimum slim....I usually mix 1/2c of that with 1/2c of the ***** Go Lean Crunch and add organic skim milk to it. It's great with some frozen blueberries on top too. I also use those two cereals to sprinkle on top of organic low-fat vanilla yogurt with some cut up fruits.....yummmmmmmmy!!!!!

Oh, cereal...I have such a bittersweet relationship with the stuff. I LOVE it, but sometimes I just CANNOT stop eating it...it's addicting! Especially the high-sugar kind, which is why I stick to Cheerios, Puffins, or GoLean Crunch - those are REALLY good choices! Everyone here mentioned some great ones, too. Just steer clear of Cinnamon Toast Crunch and Cocoa Krispies -those are what kill me!! (Especially when the milk gets all sweet/chocolatey at the end of the bowl!!....Mmmmm!!)
You should try mixing some cereal (maybe 1 c. or so) with lowfat cottage cheese or yogurt and a banana -it's SO delicious and really fills you up!

Well, I don't like cow's milk, so I've never eaten milk with my cereal since I was a kid. I've eaten it dry all those years, and it was never too dry for me. And I've gotten tons of people over the years that have wondered how I can eat cereal without the milk. lol
But the Rolled Oats is a little too dry for my tastes. So I'll just put a little soy milk, or rice or almond milk in with it.

I've eaten an organic Autumn Wheat cereal by the Kas-hi brand. Though,
Kas-hi was actually bought out by Kellogg's some years back. So I''m a little more hesitant to buy their products right now.

I eat cheerios the original, only 1 gram of sugar 3 fiber and 4 protein. I love cereal I have it twice a day most times. As long as you find a ceral without sugar that has fiber and protein your doing great. plain old oatmeal is great as well.

How about ***** Good Friends or ***** Go Lean Crunch? Or I just discovered Wheetabix, which takes on the flavor of anything you put on it, milk, peanut butter, jam...

I like ***** cereal. It's like seven puffed grains, plus sesame seeds.
***** also makes a hot cereal that you have to cook; it's sort of like oatmeal, but chewier and with lots of different grains in it.
Other than that, I like regular quaker oatmeal, and plain puffed-grain cereals (puffed wheat, corn, or rice, and the more obscure grains like puffed Millet and Quinoa- pronounced "Keen-wa") which are usually available at Whole Foods or in the health food section of your grocery store. These cereals are great because they are so low-calorie... usually only 50 or 60 calories per serving. I use a little Splenda to sweeten them, and they taste great.
edit: How weird... the name of the cereal I posted was censored. I guess we're not allowed to recommend products by name?
Well, the cereal I recommended starts with a "K" and is a popular brand of whole-grain cereal... I'm sure you can figure out which one it is! ;)

In the healfood area of the grocery store, try the Cascadian Farm Multi Grain Squares (the one with the strawberries on the front) it is sometimes on sale...but is a little expensive...just mix a little honey with it (also from the health food store) you'll love it.........
