Hey guys,

I'm looking for a bit of advice/help. I have recently (last month or so) begun suffering from severe constipation. I didn't have a bowel movement for a week, then took 2 Dulcolax and within a day lost about 3lbs of poo. (Lovely, I know.) I upped my fruit + veg intake (those rich in fibre) did a bit more exercise and continued taking lactulose, a gentle laxative. I had a few bowel movements but mainly just loads of gas, so... I took 2 more dulcolax (recommended dose) but no sucess, so took 3 the next night which cleared things out. Hurrah! I thought. I'm now 24 hours on from having cleared out my colon, and I can already tell things are building up again as I haven't had a bowel movement in the last 24 hours.

I have a history of anorexia and bulimia but am in recovery and at a healthy weight. The only food intolerances I have are garlic and wheat pasta. I don't know what's triggered this because I haven't changed anything but it's driving me mad and I feel like I'm becoming dependent on strong laxatives to sort things out. I work full-time so it's not ideal. I also suffer occasionally from chest pains in the right hand side of my chest, just under my ribs. REALLY don't know what else I can do so any advice would really help!

The pain could be caused by your gallbladder??

For a person to have normal BMs they need to intake 25 to 35 grams of fibre daily along with 6 to 8 glases of water.

The fibre needs to be a combination of both insoluble and soluble fibre.
Souble fibre bulks up your stool by absorbing water and insoluble fibre causes the intestinal muscles to contract causing the food to move through.

As you may know laxatives can be habit forming and cause alot of problems with your intestines --- these problems can last a life time.

Good health begins in your intestines--- by the nutrients you absorb.

Take care of yourself--- NO one else will~~~Harry

My mom has suffered with chronic constipation for many years and tried dozens of remedies (flax, polyethylene glycol :nono: , bowls of shredded wheat throughout the day, etc, etc.) and I came across an article on Senna Leaf tea and it's abilities to loosen up the bowels. She tried it a few weeks ago and it worked like a charm. Just be careful not to overdo it both in quantity and frequency of use.

Thanks!

What does the tea taste like?

Water, coffee, prunes, flaxseeds.
That's my recipe for digestive health (you need to consume all four on a daily basis; fortunately, water's free and prunes and flaxseeds are cheap. If you don't like coffee, you don't absolutely need it).
I agree with the poster who said to beware of chemical laxatives; they are both unnecessarily harsh, and habit-forming.
Good luck.
