Hello everyone...Does anyone have trouble wiht their bottom number? My bottom number is usually my trouble. My top number is usually okay on the average. However my bottom number has a mind of it's own and varies constantly.

Here are some samples of my bp over the last 3 days

107/80
118/83
112/90
134/97
119/81
122/89
119/99

136/102 highly anxiuos today though it did come down to 120/97 after a 10 minute wait and a recheck.

A month agao I had a sinus infection and broncitus and went to the dr and got an antibiotic script. My bp that day was 154/105 She told me to come back in a month and have it checked again because sometimes being sick can make it be higher. Also I had just been there two months agao and it was 124/82 and fine. Although she said if when I come back it had not come down she was going to put me on bp meds.
So I kept track of it over the month and it was averaging 120/82 with the ocassional spikes of my bottom number in to the 90's
So I cancelled my appt because I had watched it and it did go down.
Now however I am having some extreme stress going on in my life and the last 3 days it is giving me trouble again. My numbers have been closer to the 90's and sometimes over 100.
It always goes down though when I lay down and a lieing bp for me can be as low as 95/76. ( that would be a nice number to have always)

I am thinking of buying those OTC water pills and see if that helps any. I also am needing to lose weight and I am working on that. I do know since I put back on 20 lbs my bp is erratic at times. But generally fine. So loosing weight i know will help me..

Also any one have any input on weather temporary stress related high bp is a medicated situation? I am assuming if high bp over a long period of time that does not come down would mean it always measures high weather you are sitting, standing or lying down?

Normal or not is based on bp taken in a seated position. Measuring it lying down or standing up is interesting but does not determine if you have abnormal bp.

I have stubborn d. pressure as well. Yesterday my s. was 100 and yet my d. was still 80 (it's usually 80-95, has been as high as 110). No one has ever had any answers for me.

Oh I also wanted to say that stress related high BP is still high BP, it's all the same to the heart. So really try to monitor those numbers, in good times and bad. Good luck!

Hi, It's been a while since I posted but have not been able to control my diastolic bp. I usually run around 140/96 with spikes up to 160/105 (avg). I am currently on Lisinopril 20mg and Clonidine .01 1x a day with up to 2x if my BP is spiking. I am always sleepy  and kind of dizzy sometimes but I think its because of the meds. I go to the Dr. again on Friday this week. I need something that will work but am afraid to try something new since I had such bad experiences with side effects on other meds.

What helps is lowering diastolic pressure???

High diastolic is usually the hypertension of the YOUNG. Are all of you high diastolics under 30? :D

I feel that high diastolic is more often a consequence of excess water buildup in the plasma. As such, a trial with a diuretic or extreme salt restriction might do the trick (maybe 1500 mg./day tops.?)

Lauralu,
If you want to try diuretics (a good idea IMHO) I STRONGLY recommend you get the prescription stuff, either HCTZ or LASIX. The OTC herbal concoctions do not work well enough and you have to take them many times a day...and they wind up costing MUCH more than the Rx. Prescription diuretics are VERY cheap.

I guess, the best advice to youngsters with high diastolic is that it will go down with age. :D:D...oh now I feel like an old coot!:(
Exercise and weight loss should help a lot, too.

I'm 45.

But yes, I am on Triam/HCTZ, which helps.

Lenin....I am 41... Wish I was under 30. This morning my resting bp is 105/85 ...Bp is a crazy crazy thing. I did however reschedule my appt to talk my numbers over with my dr for Friday. I am going to ask about a script for a diaretic. We shall see! :)

I just turned 50, and have had high blood pressure for over 4 years, and elevated blood pressure for probably 5 years before that. The diastolic has always been my biggest problem. The systolic seems to respond well to the exercise, diet, vitamins and medications. Low sodium diet, which I have followed even before BP problems, never made any difference. The only thing I have found that seems to contribute is vigorous physical exercise. I used to walk 4 miles/per day at a pace of about 4 miles per hour (I am a fast walker) every day. It made no difference. I now jog 3/miles per day at a pace of about 5 miles per hour (and a slow runner!) 4 - 5 days a week. The running makes the difference. I tried speeding up and didn't gain anything, so I stay at the very moderate pace. If anyone has anything else that contributes to lower diastolic, I would love to hear it. While this contributes to lowering the diastolic, it still fluctuates a lot more than my systolic.

Do you girls drink a lot of carbonated beverages? I am a diet 7-up addict.

Just looking for a possible link.

No, never touch them. Just never developed the taste I guess. Good try though. I am mostly a water and decaf or herb tea drinker.

I drink herb tea too. But I also eat M&Ms.

I work out a lot.

Maybe it's just hereditary???
