This morning it was 180/98.
I just got a new machine and my husband's readings are what its his usual b/p readings, so I don't think it's the machine. I have been eating alot of foods with high sodium the last few days. I talke 100 mg. of Toprol and 80 mg. of Diovan and 25 mg. of hctz daily. I usually run between the 140's/86 or so and sometimes it spikes to the 160's over 98 range for a day or two.
Does this seem like reason for concern tonight to have this sudden spike?
I feel fine.

yank's,
You are not getting good enough numbers considering you're on a 3 drug regimen. Readings like 202/105 and 180/98 should NOT be happening with decent BP control.
I think you should revisit your drug regimen.
IF you are a salt sensitive hypertensive (approx. 25% of the population) the Diovan is useless and the Toprol not very good. As a test of the salt sensitivity, you can try something like 1/2 the dose of toprol (so you don't have withdrawal spikes) and 50 mg. HCTZ. If that works better, then you should think about a CCB-Diuretic regimen of some kind or just a diuretic. Have you ever tried Lasix or chlorthalidone?
Whatever is your eventual outcome, a fact you can take to the bank is that your current batch of pills is not right for you.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll keep a diary of my readings and give them to my doctor when I see him next month. This afternoon my b/p was 150/93.
So, it's still elevated but not nearly as high as last night.
I do take 25 mg of hctz. I can't tolerate more--I just barely can take that.
I've tried 3 other b/p meds and had adverse side effects so this had been working and I'm hoping this is an isolated couple of days that are happening to me.
