Have you tried verapamil? It is reasonably inexpensive and my mom takes it. It lowers her bp somewhat, but she takes other bp meds as well.

The CCB my son takes is nifedipine PA (Prolonged Action), it is also known as Adalat. He doesn't seem to have any side effects from it, but he's on other BP meds as well.

Hello,

GENERIC NAME: diltiazem
BRAND NAMES: Cardizem, Dilacor, Tiazac

I use the brand name Dilacor. For me there are no side effects. In combination with a diuretic and Diovan (Valsartan) my pressure is down from an alarming 240/140 to 115/65. I do have morning and evening spikes at times, 150+/90+, but never the high, high levels I had previously on other meds. Norvasc never lowered my pressure and caused constant swelling of my feet!! I'm not sure the Diovan really does anything for me. I will be seeing Doc on 3/21 and will ask if I can drop it to see what happens. Good luck on your search for a new CCb that works for you. Don't know why Board designated me as a male I am female

Hi,

I think I will have to try verapamil :) and see what will happen. I really like that drug class and I can't be on anything else because all the other drug classes causes many side effects that I can't live with :(.
Thanks for help again

Michael,

Verapamil is a good drug and works well for a good many people that I know personally. I have used it and mixed it with an ARB like Cozaar but it lowered my BP really low...too low.
But it is worth a try.

How about just increasing the dosage of cardizem/diltiazem etc.?

Hello Stumper,

I really need to try it but I'm not sure what's the dosage that I should start with, can you recommend a dosage? by the way, I have tried Cozaar before and I want to say that it made me like drunk all the day. I felt so bad and I had to stop it.

Hello Pal7778,

I started with Cardiazim SR 90 mg twice daily and after 2-3monthes I increased the dosage to 120mg and I'm not sure that I should increase it to 180mg or not. What do you think?

The best thing is that I have NO side effects from using CCB :D.
Thanks for help,
Michael

I would probably let the doctor set the dosage. All of these meds have different ratings and so forth. But, if anything, Verapamil lowest dosage on the extended realease is 120 Mg., and I find it very inexpensive. For me, its more than enough. I can break these in half, twice a day, and it is plenty. The lowest dosage on the regular acting Verapamil is 40 Mg. I have these as well and I like the way the 40's look. Kind of remind me of a small round orange flintstone vitamin. Cute little things.

Just one more thing. Verapamil is stronger than Cardiazim?
Thanks,
Michael

Now THAT I don't know. What I DO know is that they are similar. I tried Cardiazim LA and for me the Verapamil was better...acted better. But that is me.

All you can do is try it.

:) I hope it will work for me better than Cardiazim.
Thanks,
Michael

I don't think one is stronger than another. What's best in your case can only be figured out thru trial and error. My own experience is that the once a day versions
of Diltiazem give better results.+

Pal,
Do you happen to know what the max dose of Tiazac is? What dose are you on?

J'm on 300, you could go to 540. But the typical doses are 150 and 300. The difference for me is about 10 systolic.
