I go to the endo next month, and am going to ask to be put on the pump. I'm on 5 shots a day now. I have it narrowed down to Animas and Deltec. Which should I get? Anyone have either? How do you like it? What features would you recommend?

Does anyone have either of these?

Mini-Med pumps are probably the most common I have seen on the boards the tech support and customer service are awesome. They all work about the same way.

Sorry Blondy, I'd love to help you out, but I'm on a Medtronic MiniMed pump, too.

Frankly, I think all three are probably just as good...it's more a matter of preference. The Deltec Cosmo does have the bg meter that can attach to the pump, but there are pros and cons to that, too...in that it makes the pump bigger and heavier. But that's about all I know about either of those pumps, unfortunately.

Are you happy with minimed then?

Yes I am...but then, it was the only pump I was offered by my doctor when I first switched to pumping, and I'm probably just used to it, lol.

I've got a Paradigm 512, and I basically like it. It's not perfect (is anything?), but the problems are few and far between. I did have to have it replaced several times due to some problems (the original pump, a 511, had static electricity problems which they've since corrected, and the 512's down arrow button stopped working once), but each time Medtronic overnighted a new pump for delivery by 10 AM the next day, so it really wasn't much of a problem.

The one thing I probably would take into consideration is the fact that more people use Medtronic than any of the other companies...not that I think it's an indication of their pump being better, but more important in case you ever have a problem getting supplies and need to "borrow" from someone. On another board I belong to, one of our members lost their health insurance converage, and several of us were able to mail some supplies to him because we all use the same pump.

Other than that, as I said, probably just a matter of preference as to which bells and whistles you like better.

My son uses the Animas pump and loves it, he had a mini-med prior to that. There are quite a few boards out there just dealing with insulin pumps and can answer more specific questions you have.

I am an Engineer and I did a lot of research prior to getting an insulin pump. I downloaded the user manuals for both the Animas and the
Deltec pumps. I selected the Deltec pump. I have been using the pump for about 7 months and couldn't be happier with it.

Some of the reasons I selected the Deltec pump was: The missed bolus alerts. I have a habit of forgetting to give a bolus; The Cozmonitor program for downloading the data to a computer; Updates at no additional cost; 300 unit cartridge ( now available with Animas); any infusion set can be used (Minimed requires using their infusion sets); will continue to deliever a basal dose after pump indicates it is empty;large number of basil rates; large number of other alerts that can be programed into the pump; all settings can be set on the computer and then downloaded to the pump( this is much easier than doing it on the pump).

When I sent in the order for the pump, they contacted me the day they received the order. They were going to ship the pump UPS but I told them I was not going to be in town the next week so they shipped it overnight air at no extra cost. I do use the Minimed infusion sets because I do not like the Deltec infusion set. They have recently come out with the Cleo 90 infusion set that looks good. They are sending me a sample of the new infusion set at no cost. I have required no service on my pump but my dealings with them has been very satisfactory.

I have been very Happy with the minimed 712. Like Sam said they probably all work about the same. The neat thing that minimed came out with is a bloodless Glucose monitor. The way it works now is another canula under the skin that that transmits your blood sugar reading to a monitor device that look like a meter. I spoke with the rep and the readout will be integrated into the pump it will transmit your blood sugar reading instead of sticking your fingers. You do have to calibrate it once a day. They have some pretty cool tech in the works.
