I am oficially "in" menopause and I've noticed that my fingernails have almost stopped growing. I used to have beautiful nails and now I'm almost embarassed to get a manicure. My nails split and break and even look flatter. My left thumbnail broke off months ago and hasn't grown back.
Has anyone else noticed this and/or have any suggestions?
Many thanks,

I haven't had this to occur a matter of fact my nails are still growing quite fast. They are thin, but I think they have always been this way (can't really remember after all that I've been through these years dealing with hormonal imbalance). Maybe it's all the vitamins, supplements, and progesterone that I'm taking. :)

I am having nail troubles too. I wore artifical nails for years stopped about 18 months ago and can't grow my natural nails back. I have 3 nails that just won't grow. They split and crack for no reason. I have read a lot of ladies have the same problems in peri-menopause and menopause. Changes in hormones. I have just started using TIPS. I got it from QVC. You brush it on once a day. I tried Nail Envy from OPI but it didn't help. Will let you know how the TIPS works. Ann

I am still having regular periods, so I'm not officially in menopause yet. My fingernails seem to grow ok, but what I notice are the differences in my toenails. Both of my big toenails have a band across them and some ridges on each toenail. Naturally, I want to know what causes this, and think it may be hormonal. One of my big toenails seems like it is loose too, so I probably need to see my doctor pretty soon.

Viktik I'm also having some weird things happening with my big toe nail, but it's mainly the right toe. It was discolored, grew out to a more normal color, and then became a bit discolored again. I'm wondering if it's my hormones, shoes too tight (I have put on weight all over  ), or just some strange occurance. Let's blame this also on perimenopause :) :D.

I've never had good nails. I bought this stuff in the mall in a store that carries mostly hair products. IT's the best stuff. I doubt that I can mention the name here, but it was $10. compared to one I used to get by mail that was $20 per bottle. This clear polish you just brush on and it's been the best thing I've ever used. Only problem is that you have to keep up with it and I haven't. My nails were actually growing. Back in the 70s I used the popular gelatine tablets. My toenails grew like crazy!

Hi Jo,
I would be interested in knowing what you used. I think you can mention the product, they do all the time on the beauty and cosmetic board. My nails are giving me fits. I am always looking for new ideas. Thanks, Ann

Hi Janesjesse,

I put nail oil on my cuticles at least once a day. I get those brittle nails too and the nail oil seems to help. You may want to see if your local beauty supply store has them.

Good luck and let us know your progress. :D

My nails have become even softer than ever and simply disintegrate, sometimes even right after I file them. I hope my hair stays intact! Its all made of keratin!!

Thanks for your replies. I'm going to try a strengthener and the cuticle oil. It's nice to know I'm not alone.
Jane :)

Cruisers,
I bought the nail product in Trade Secret. It's something like Nailique #2.
