View Full Version : Diabetes and Abdominal pain?

For the past two months I have had severe stomach issues.

I had a colonoscopy because my mom has crohns/colitis and I've always had weird digestive problems, but that found nothing.

Then, my appetite died...

Every time I did eat (sometimes even when I didnt) I'd have horrible stomach pains in my upper abdomen, extreme bloating, followed by nausea and usually I'd spend some time wretching in the toilet (not usually PRODUCING much VOMIT but just dry heaving for ages)... Thinking I had an ulcer, the doc ordered a GASTROSCOPY which found nothing.

Continually feeling worse, I had an ultrasound to check for gallstones (found nothing)... Then, the doc put me on a liquid diet which eased the bloat somewhat, but gave me horrible diarhea, sometimes bloody. Bad cramping then followed. I had many urine/stool tests... all finding nothing once again, rounds and rounds of bloodwork.. NOTHING.

So... then, i had a small bowel follow through (drinking the barium)... which once again, has shown.. you guessed it... nothing.

My doctor had been willing to bet his left leg i had crohns due to family history and my symptoms but we never found it...

I had a CT scan which also, showed nothing...

Eventually, my tummy just started to feel better... and we kind of chalked it up to stress or something along those lines because we couldnt find an answer.

In the whole process I lost about 15 lbs...

Now, since beginning to eat again... (which took a while) .. My weight has maintained and yet... suddenly... lately im so extremely thirsty all day... and often when i do eat (example the other day i had a ham and cheese sandwich, 10 carrot sticks, an apple and a fruit leather), i often am left feeling hungrier than i was orginally... its very strange.

Also, im finding at night, if i lay with my arms over my head, i get exteme pins and needles in virtually seconds, which i know sounds weird... but i notice it.

Lastly, I often suffer from serious dizzy spells.. my eyes just kind of go black, or i see silver sparkles... I actually fainted once... very unlike me...

Now, my aunt is suggesting that maybe I have diabetes?
Does this all sound consistant? I've been through a lot and to be honest, im just really confused at this point.

Any comments would be appreciated

This really sounds nothing like diabetes. Diabetes does not typically cause the severe stomach issues you describe, and actually increases appetite. You would also experience extreme thirst and increased urination with diabetes, which you did not mention.

Have you been tested for celiac disease?

I actually did mention the extreme thirst in my post....

Is that actually a sign of diabetes? Geez... I just feel quite dehydrated ALL the time... constant dry mouth, and when i start drinking, i just cant help but guzzle... And now that you mention it... I've been peeing nonstop... but i figured that was just because I drink all day...

I'm usually up at least two three times in the night to take a wee...

I would suggest that you be tested for diabetes. It couldn't hurt. Also, could it be an ulcer causing you pain? A doctor should recommend an endoscopy (light down your throat into your stomach), I would think. (Of course you'd be asleep thru this or close enough to it). I don't know if an ulcer would show up in the other tests you've had.

Just a thought.

I know that diabetes makes you thirsty and makes you pee a lot, but I wouldn't say it gives me dry mouth, at least not much.

Keep trying to find out what's wrong. Don't give up. How many times I've heard stories where people knew something was wrong and was tested but nothing was found. Then out of the blue, they have a serious problem or illness like cancer, which turns out to be advanced. Keep trying so that you can catch whatever "it" is before it gets to an advanced stage.

Best of luck to you,

Yeah I had the gastroscopy... (endoscopy)

REALLY sucked.... i wasnt NEARLY sedated enough... we all TOTALLY thought ulcer but it didnt show up... it was totally bizarre...

My doc said he wanted to test for diabetes so maybe we'll do that but if nothing comes up im just leaving it... im so tired of tests...

I'm surprised with all the tests he did run that he wouldn't have gotten a glucose, typically thats a basic blood test. If he didn't get that I couldn't imagine what else he missed.

Yeah Fully,

its funny because i've had ROUNDS and ROUNDS of bloodwork, but they've never done that test.... i know they havent because you have to fast beforehand and i never did... i was never asked to.

At first, we kind of peddled along with tests, because no one really believed how bad i felt.... but then when the bleeding started.. FINALLY people were like.... oh man, she was serious!!!

This is just a thought. When my son was in the hospital a short time ago, with high blood sugars, he was also having extrem stomach pains. He had stopped eating and taking his insulin. He had stomach problems for years, the doctor found out that he had an inflamed pancreas. They put him on a low fat diet. They do not know how it happens or what causes it. But they said that even a french fry could kill him when he has an attact. He has been checked for a lot things over the last 10 years and this the first I had heard about it. Now when he gets an attact he eats clear liquids for a few days and eats a low fat diet until it clears up
