Around the time I started having several symptoms of peri (app.2 years ago) I also started having a fast heart rate and high blood pressure.. Over a couple of months I had a couple of episodes where I would wake up with my heart beating fast and felt like I couldn't breathe. These passed pretty fast. After the third one I went to the doctor. My heart was pounding so hard and it really scared me. I could even hear my heartbeat in my ears. At the doctors my BP was 185/100 and my heart rate at rest was running around 130. After being on a heart monitor for about three weeks and tests by my doctor and a cardiologist everything checked out okay.

At the time my husband ask the doctor if this could be brought on by meno (I was having night sweats, anxiety, mood swings, etc) and he said no. I was 46. I have been on Toprol XL 50 mg daily since then.

I really feel that it may just be the meno that brought this all on and would like to get off the meds if possible.

Has anyone else had the problem with the heart rate and high BP ? I heard Slow-Mag is good for this.

Thanks :)

RW we are in the same boat :), since my perimenopausal symptoms became severe I've been dealing with elevated blood pressure that is under control with Toprol XL 50mg and Diovan 80mg. I have also been dealing with anxiety issues which also came about along with the other peri issues.

I must say that I have also put on a lot of weight that I'm truly praying about and working at losing which is probably also a contributing factor.

Now about that doctor thinking that peri/meno can not bring on elevated blood pressure...I know that he is wrong...very wrong, and I'm so tired of people in the medical profession not keeping up with new information, research, or just plain old common sense facts. If they see 100 women going through menopause and we all have high blood pressure with no previous history I think it should be easy for them to figure out the common factor.

I know women personally and from sites like these who are now on blood pressure medications since their hormones decided to take an extended vacation without them :).

Thank God for those few excellent doctors (I've finally found one :)) who are truly a blessing.

Thanks for the response Hopefully.

Usually my doctor is great but he was definitely wrong on this one. I have always been healthy, hardly even get a cold, then all of a sudden, Bam ! the fast heart rate and blood pressue issues!! It really freaked me out ! It seems silly now, but I really thought I was going to die. ANXIETY

I was put on Zoloft and Ativan at the time and it really helped. I haven't taken it in a long time but since my hormones are starting to do their thing again I'm thinking about starting the Ativan at night to help me sleep.

Have a good day everyone

Do you guys smoke? Or ya'll on hormones? I know I tried to take hormones and I was smoking and my blood pressure shot up real high. When I quit smoking and quit taking hormones it went down. While I'm proud of the fact I quit smoking, somedays I wish I could maybe it would help my nervous. My pulse is still high about 100 at rest.

I don't smoke or take hormones. However, I am overweight, which I am working on. I have lost 5 lbs. just by cutting back on eating junk food. So, hopefully I can help the heart rate and BP with diet and exercise.

Congrats on stopping smoking !! :)

Thanks. Off topic but did the zoloft and ativan help with anxiety. Im having a real hard time with it. I gained alot of weight on the hormones. Thought I gain more after I quit smoking. I think my nervous are keeping it off. I would love to lose 5 pounds. They say the first 5 or the hardest. Take care, its so nice to have somebody to talk with.

The meds were great. I used the Ativan only at night to help me sleep and the Zoloft worked great for the stress and depression. It also helped with the blood pressure. I took the Zoloft for about 6 months.

Hang in there.

Thanks for the reply. I've got appointment to see doctor April 6. I was going to try and make it without any pills. I cant Im sitting here with the feeling I need to leave cant be at home by myself today. This is so unfair. We have to have the babies and then we have to go thru this. Feeling a little sorry for myself today. Sometimes I wish I was born a man. I sure they wish sometimes they were born to be women. If they only knew. Thanks for listening. Think I'll go to library. Take Care have a nice day.

I'm having the same problem with blood pressure. Approx. 1 1/2 weeks ago I was in the doctors office and my blood pressure was extremely high - 150/108. He put me on medication immediately. My blood pressure was 150/90 when I went to my gyno last Oct for my normal check up. I had it rechecked at reg. doctor and it was 138/88. I did discover I'm in perimenopause last Oct. as well and have been dealing with many of the symptoms, especially racing heart (went to the ER in October 15 for racing heart they did and EKG and it was fine - bp was 143/84 and they didn't say a word to me about it), heart palpitations and insomnia. Had a holter monitor on for 24 hours November 4, 2005 and it was normal - myheart did not race that day - go figure. My pressure has always been pretty normal my entire adult life. I do get the "white coat" syndrome at the doctors office all the time and my pressure is usually high in his office but never as high as stated above. Last March my pressure was 120/70 when a nurse came to my house for a physical for life insurance. A few months before that it was about 120/80, taken by the same nurse at my house. I don't understand how it can be so high and why. I've exercised for many years - not so much lately because of all this perimenopause stuff and eat pretty healthy - no salt put on my food at all and don't eat alot of processed stuff. I'm confused and afraid - can this be perimenopause or menopause. There's controversy some doctors say it can be from hormones other say not. Is there any way to find out.

A year ago I started with rising blood pressure, anxiety, heart palpitations, etc, and I owe them all to perimenopause! When I went to the cardiologist for a stress test, he said I was in good shape for my age, just had some PVC's. I've always had low bp, I'm underweight, and haven't had so much as a cold for over 10 years. In the past year, I've had breast lumps, ovarian cysts, irregular cells in the cervix...now I have to see the breast surgeon and gyn every six months for testing. To add insult to injury, I'm 54 and still have periods.....we deserve meds to get us through this lovely transformation.

I'm like you, hardly even a cold and then BAM all of he above ! I really do think it all has to do with this peri thing !! I'm on a beta blocker and planning on asking my doc about trying to get off it. Oh yeah, I'm on my 5th month without a period :)
