My neurologist is starting me on lamictal in a couple of weeks for my seizure disorder. Has anyone been on it? Does anyone know anything about the rash? This is the third drug we've tried and nothing seems to be working: Tegretol, Keppra, and Zonegran just aren't good for me. So...hoping this is the one! But, wanted some input please!

Hello~

I am currently on Lamictal now. Although medication has different side effects on different people, I for one love this drug. It is the only one I have taken that does not have the bad side effects like the other ones I have tried. (Dilantin, Trileptal, Neurontin, Topamax just to name a few). With most of them, I was practically falling asleep at my desk or either couldn't function most of the time. When I started the Lamictal, it was like "waking up" so to speak.

The first go round I did have the rash, it kicked in after about a week. I got completely off the Lamictal and on to something new, which made me sleepy and gain weight. The doctor tried Lamictal again several months later and it was okay this time. HOWEVER, I just want to state that it is probably not the case with everyone, but luckily the second go-round no rash, and I have been on it ever since (roughly 2 years).

Hope that helps some!

Hi Tulip, I have been on all the drugs you mentioned and several others. I was on Lamictal also. The rash may be a first sign of a severe allergic reaction. I was on it apprx. 2 weeks when I began to notice a small red rash developing on my feet and legs. It quickly spread to my legs and torso. I called my dr. and he said stop it now! I don't know if all rashes from it are allergic reactions, but if you notice one tell your dr. immediately so he can evaluate it. I had a lot of trouble finding a med. I could toerate and finally ended up on phenobarbitol. It's worked as well as anything has and I've not had ill effects from it. Good luck. Laura

Exactly- some rashes can mean allergic reactions leading to death. CALL THE DOC !!! My mom took Lamictal, and it didn't cause her any problems.

 Gidday Ive got TLE and been on Lamictal for approx 3.5 years and had no problem. I had seizures when I first started because I had to drop 100mg of Dilantin and start taking 25mg of Lamictal and up the dose by 25mg fortnightly. Once I had the day dose correct I then had to do the same with the night dose I now take 900mg per day. I did not get a rash of any kind. But I did find that each time I increased the dose for the first three days I would be ok the next three days I would get light headed for 2 to 3 hours. Sometimes I had to close one eye to see properly while that happened. I have found it one of the better drugs to be on. As well as Lamictal I also take 600mg of Tegretol & 1000 mg of Keppra. Good Luck. :)
