Can a blood test to check your liver and pancrease enzymes show if you have Sphincter of Oddi Dysfunction (SOD)? If so, do you have to have the blood drawn during an attack or at anytime? Is SOD a serious disease - can it be fatal? Can't tell if my symptoms are just gerd attacks or this SOD disease. Doc suggested going for a test to a specialist to look into SOD, but I hear it can cause complication with the pancreas? Is it worth getting done? What if my symptoms are only gerd and I mess up my pancrease for no reason.... caught between a rock and a hard place.

The only way to really diagnose SOD is with ERCP along with manometry. Manometry will check the pressures in the ducts and diagnose problems. ERCP can lead to Pancreatitis. I developed Pancreatitis following an ERCP to see why my liver function was so high, and steadily climbing. They didn't have manometry at the time of my first ercp, so we didn't find I had SOD until two years later. I was told I would have ended up with Pancreatitis eventually based on the findings at the ERCP/Manometry, but the ERCP brought it about sooner.

Talk to the Dr. about doing an EGD (Endoscopy). That can help in the diagnosis of GERD. I'd think long and hard before doing an ERCP if your symptoms are pretty manageable.
