*** Then, on February 20, 2006, I started taking 3-4 drops of Grapefruit seed extract everyday in a glass of water. ***
My big problems started on March 17, 2006 when I went to bed I started
to hear very loud gurgling, growling noises in my belly and I felt this
liquid inside my body bubbling up towards my throat, it kept me up all night bewildered, scared, worried, concerned and stressed out because of it ...
I changed my diet a year and a half ago (a healthier one ... except I eat too much peanutbutter but it's 100% NATURAL)... and have been taking the same supplements since the past 5 years ...
EVERYTHING IS EXACTLY THE SAME FOR THE PAST 18 MONTHS I WOULD SAY.
The only thing I did DIFFERENT was that I started to take Grapefruit
seed extract ...
Could this have cause so much problems in only 3 weeks ????
I need some serious advice from a Naturopath please !!!!!!
I have never had problems with my digestion before ... NEVER !!!
I want to understand what has happened to me ???
What should I do now ??
It's been 9 days of this torture and problems with my digestion ... I eat half of what I used to ... for fear of making the problems worst ... :nono:
and everynight the liquid comes up from my belly to my throat and leaves
a very acid taste in my mouth ... it's very unpleasant.
I have to sleep with three pillows since this started to happen ...
The thing is that I don't have any pain really ... but especially after I eat ... ALOT of belching, burping, passing gas ... and LOUD BELLY NOISES... it is HORRIBLE ... and one more IMPORTANT thing is that everytime I swallow lets say water, it's as if it goes down in GULPS ... MAKING A STRANGE NOISE LIKE A FROG IN WATER!!!... very strange sensation ...
I am 42 years old and in great shape, I don't know what happened ??
I REALLY NEED SOME HELP AND ADVICE
Has this happened to anybody else ALL OF A SUDDEN ONE NIGHT AND OUT OF NOWHERE?????
Thank-you so much ... I hope to hear from people that have the same concerns, help, advice , anything ...

Yes, this can happen out of nowhere. It has been building up to this point and then it happened. There is a first time for everything and this was it with your reflux problems.
You are taking a lot of supplements and it maybe that the grapefruit seed extract was the crowning blow.
Do you take supplements on a full stomach or on an empty stomach?
Sounds like your body is rebelling and needs rest from some of the supplements.
I had to go off of several supplements a year ago, body just could not handle it anymore. Just too much of the good things.

In the past we were told to take supplements, especially antioxidants for better health. They now have done extensive studies and are finding out all those supplements can in fact cause more problems than they help. Even antioxidants are considered to not be good now. Just think how much money some of us spent taking all the antioxidats we could for better health.....grrrrr! So, to answer your question, no, supplements are not always good for you, a balanced diet, exercise, restful sleep is better.
I went to the orthopedic doctor recently and asked him questions regarding bones, calcium, fluoride, etc. He said everything they were taught to do in the past has now been determined not to be the right thing. He says they are now telling them they have been doing it wrong.
Yes, I did go to my internist, he was of little help, doctors are not trained in supplements, etc. I had restless leg syndrome and I had to figure out what was causing it. My husband was not able to take Vitamin E, made him have nervous feeling, so he suggested it might be Vitamin E causing the restless legs. I stopped the Vitamin E and in a couple weeks my legs settled down and I have not had the problem since (has been 3 years now). Told my doctor and he said he was going to check with his other patients with restless legs, that my experience might be of help to them.
Most multi-vitamins in the past contained more than 5,000 IU Vitamin A and I found out by omitting the multi-vitamin and only taking the B-Complex I felt better. Tried taking vitamins with Vitamin A in it again and did not feel good. I tinkered with on again and off taking anything with Vitamin A and discovered it was in fact Vitamin A causing the problem. My body had reached it's tolerance of Vitamin A. The only reason I take B-Complex is because I am diabetic and cannot eat the fortified cereal and breads, my diet is deficinet in B vitamins.
Yes, I had acid-reflux off and on for the past few years, but, after taking Actonel for my bones, the Actonel damaged my esophagus and stomach. Thought it was o.k. now but off and on have to go back on Prevacid again. I have been reading acid-reflux is a long term and possibly permanent condition. You can have some acid reflux off and on for a long time before it becomes chronic. Acid-reflux must be treated, however, medication for acid-reflux has side effects too. Prevacid can cause anemia.
You would be wise to back off of so many supplements, let your body go natural and see if things improve for you. My body rebelled and yours may be doing the same.

Thank-you so much for sharing ur story, my heart goes out to u as well ... I'm VERY concerned because NOT only do I have this reflux problem, but I belch and pass gas ALL DAY LONG ... and have these strange grumbling, gurgling, bubbling noises going on constantly ... even when I drink water it goes down in GULPS ... and gurgles while it's going down ... hard to explain ... IT'S UNBELEIVABLE ACTUALLY ... and I haven't had a descent poop in days ... SORRY TO BE SO GRAPHIC  ... This all started about 10 days ago with NO PRIOR WARNINGS !!! ... I'M TOTALLY SHOCKED AT THIS POINT
Please keep in touch ESPECIALLY if u wanna share anything else and I will do the same.
I was wondering at what age this started for you if u don't mind ???

You need to see a gastroenterologist for proper diagnosis. It may be something other than acid reflux causing your problem.
This can happen to a person of any age. I was much older than you when I had the first sign of acid reflux. Actually I considered it an over acid stomach at that time and used Rolaids. The past year it was nothing other than Acid Reflux deluxe after taking Actonel. Actonel and other meds can cause a relaxing of the spincher muscle that keeps acid from the stomach coming up into the esophagus.
Peppermint will relax the spincher too, so, stay away from anything peppermint. I just read about peppermint recently.
Here is a list of foods to avoid according to a acid reflux diet: caffeine, orange juice, lemon, lemonade, grapefruit juice, cranberry juice, tomato, mashed potatoes, french fries, raw onion, ground beef chuck, marbled sirloin, chicken nuggets, buffalo wings, sour cream, milk shake, ice cream, reg. cottage cheese, grains, macaroni cheese, spaghetti with sauce, liquor, wine, coffee decaf or reg., fats/oils, creamy salad dressing, high fat cookies, brownie, chocolate, doughnut, corn chips, potato chips.
You will notice that most of the above foods are high in fat or acid.
O.K. just noticed something, grapefruit juice is listed and I believe you said you were taking grapefruit seed extract. Hmmmm....do you see a connection by chance? Did your problem start "after" starting the grapefruit seed extract?
Still think you need to back off of supplements and let your body recover. See a doctor to be sure what the problem is.

THANKS SO MUCH MISTY :D ... U R VERY KIND ... I will go do the rest of my tests and then I'll see what I'm dealing with here ... then maybe also go see a NATUROPATH ... for now I've CUTOFF most of the supplements EXCEPT: CORAL CALCIUM, VITAMIN-B and I drink a teaspoon of chlorophylle every morning in a glass of water.

Dear Misty ...
Look at the e-mail I got back when I wrote to the company where I purchased the Grapefruit seed extract.
Hello !
I talked with our naturopath, please find below his recommendations :
Stop for 2 days all your vitamins. Taking 4 drops of Grapefruit seed extract is problably to much for you. Did you take Grapefruit seed extract for a particular reason ? If there were no reason and you started to take it, problably it brought you this kind of problem.
We have questions for you. Do you eat fast ? Were you surrounded recently with people with a problem of gastro ?
If not, we recommand you to take your Alochloro. Take also Activated Charcoal for 14 days and Pro-Enzymes that's going to help you to digest better.
Hoping everything is at your satisfactory and I wish you good health !
Could u beleive this ????????????
Looks like some natural problems can literally ruin ur health ESPECIALLY if u're not careful ...
IT'S FRIGHTENING !!!!!

Sounds Like you could do with a course of colonic irrigation.
I just had a course and was suffering from milder symptoms than you but of the same kind.
I was given great nutritional advice and the bloated, belching windiness all went away.
That and all the other benefits made it worth the €300 I paid out

Hi Gabriela
Reflux seems to happen from no where but actually, of course doesn't. It just often is not noticed when it begins. These problems build up slowly until out of control. I will share what I have found works for me.
When food sits in the stomach partially undigested it sours, and when more food or supplements, whatever, are added to the mix, it still remains partially undigested. This acid gets up in the esophagus and irritates the lining, even damaging it if this goes on too long undealt with. Tums and Rolaids cut the acid when actually we need more acid to fully digest, not less. Tums are also calcium which has a bowel clogging effect. Use Tums sparingly for emergency use only.
Calcium that is not properly balanced with magnesium is constipating, and Glucosamine needs large amounts of water to even be utilized effectively. I use magnesium citrate to balance calcium because it is more easily assimlated into the body.
Supplements are not in themselves bad for us, and definitely antioxidants are not bad for us, but they need to be taken with the right kind of foods for proper and balanced assimilation into the body, and yes of course as much antioxidants that we can get from the raw deeply colored fresh fruits and vegetables the better.
There is always a possibility that someything is seriously wrong with your elimination system, but I think that before worrying about that, I would take magnesium until the stool is normal again. Taking the calcium may have clogged your system (much like eating too much cheese). Taking as much magnesium with calcium that keeps the stools normal is how much magnesium you personally need to make the calcium properly assimilate where it belongs in the body. Otherwise calcium goes no where good.
I agree with the others to stop the most supplements for awhile, and take magnesium citrate until your stool is passing normally. A stopped up bowel can cause reflux, too; because if nothing is passing down, to keep putting in can only go back up.
Once your stool is back to normal, start meals with raw vegetables of intense color, esp. green leafy for the digestive enzymes you need to fully digest your meal. The enymes are dead when the food is cooked, so eat the raw veggies first (in the AM it can be raw fruit first, then cereal/toast). This will help assure that your food is fully digested, not fermenting in the tummy.
Do not lie down after eating, if possible go for a walk to aid the digestion. If you want coffee/water, drink that an hour after you eat your meal, not with meals.
Don't snack all day. The digestive process needs to get finished between eating. If you have a snack, eat a substantial one with a raw food first, then wait for the next mealtime before eating again.
All fat soluable supplements need to be taken with fatty foods, and all water soluable supplements need to be taken with water based foods. C, B, are water soluable and are good with fruit and bread. Take lethicin and oil with meat/fish/dairy. Fat requires fat to dissolve. They simply do not break down in the same way. If I mix them I get indigestion. Take the Glucosamine, magnesium, calcium between meals with a glass of water.
When we mix the fatty with the water soluable foods the digestion can become really sluggish. For me, I find that if I eat sugar/fruit/carb foods first then the fatty ones that nothing digests right. I try to have sugar/fruit/carb foods for breakfast or as a between meal snack, and so not confuse the digestive process.
I agree that you may have been taking too much Grapefruit seed extract at once. It is highly concentrated. I can only take Grapefruit seed extract on an empty stomach with no other foods at all, then I have to wait a good hour before eating or drinking anything else. It doesn't seem to mix well with anything else.
So, first, I would continue taking the B and C which are water soluable and have no adverse side effects. I would add magnesium citrate with a glass of water. Then after the first good elimination, change when I take the other supplements, and change how I eat certain foods as I mentioned above.
This is working for me and I don't take the acid reducing drugs. I did have reflux but I seem to be fine now if I eat as I mentioned. I hope something I told you will be helpful.

Gabriela,
My experience isn't with grapefruit seed extract, but raw ginger. I was fine until I started eating raw ginger (as recommended for vertigo). It helped me with the dizziness but the horrible reflux began OUT OF THE BLUE about 2 weeks later...I'm still not sure it's connected, but have wondered if the ginger was too strong/hot/irritating. This was last July. I'm on PPIs now and ginger is still my biggest trigger food. Who knows! Maybe I always had some underlying reflux and didn't know it??

BREAKFAST : 1/4 cup OATMEAL cooked slowly, very little protein ( peanutbutter or cottage cheese) , one fruit.
LUNCH: 1 cup STEAMED BROCCOLI, CAULIFLOWER or EGGPLANT, 1 tsp OLIVE OIL ... a few slices of AVOCADO ... and a VERY LITTLE portion of fish or chicken and a fruit.
DINNER: A BIG SALAD (celery, cucumber, romaine, spinach) with an apple or mandarine tossed inside, OLIVE OIL and very little protein
(beans, tofu, turkey ...)
SNACK: 3 Walnuts or 6 Almonds , 1-2 fruits
I don't eat any bread and have STOPPED MY CAFLATTE and no teas or SWEETS ... Life is hell right now
What do u think ???

Gabriela,
My experience isn't with grapefruit seed extract, but raw ginger.
I'M SO SORRY TO HEAR THAT !!!!
I know E-X-A-C-T-L-Y how u feel  ... U try to BETTER ur health and instead it starts starts to DETERIORATE !!!!
IT IS VERY SCARY !!!
What's PPIs ???
and
Do u still have REFLUX daily ??
How do u deal with it ??
Did u go see a doctor ??
THANK-U FOR SHARING :)

This raises a big question with me. I have reflux...but I also find that eating food causes me to belch tremendously and I can belch 5 hours after eating and taste the food still. This makes me think my stomach is not emptying probably and is causing the reflux... however, I've been put on Aciphex, which I couldn't take because of side effects, so I switched to Zantac 150 twice a day... I guess my question is... if the Zantac is blocking acid, won't it make digestion even more slow and make things worse? I've had heartburn (I assume its heartburn though it doesn't really feel like normal heartburn) really bad and have to take something for it...I'm scheduled for an ultrasound and endoscopy... but wouldn't a Upper GI be better first before an endoscopy? Wouldn't a barium swallow show lower GI problems such as stomach not emptying?

Hello Gabriela
I am schedualed for a test next Thursday, where they send a camera down your stomach. Been waiting for about 4 months for this test.
Right now I was given Nexium 40mg twice a day. Like you I wish I did not have to take any meds, but they helped, so I wouldn't think about stoping them. Good luck

INDEED, our stomachs need that acid to DIGEST OUR FOODS properly ... therefore we should NOT suppress it, so to speak ...
The problem is when the acid comes back up, now thats the BAD PART :(
How long have u been living with this belching even HOURS after a meal ??
I also have that same EXACT PROBLEM, at times it's even difficult to go in public after a meal ...
ARGHHH SO FRUSTRATING ...
I wonder though ... to have a quicker digestion, I beleive that the best thing would be NOT to mix proteins and carbs at the same meal ... cause that will most definately PROLONG THE DIGESTING ... and stomach emptying ... Just a thought ... and to eat MINI MEALS a few times a day as opposed to larger meals twice a day ...
