View Full Version : Can't Watch Movies...Flickering Lights...

You really have to wonder what genius decided every movie has to have super fast flickering lights in EVERY Hollywood movie this year?

We watched DOOM and about 30 minutes later, bham! I got a headache and then I got an absence seizure. I'm sure I'll have a complex partial tonight. (I'm weird I get complex seizures after absence seizures.)

I remember watching the Matrix movies, I had to have sunglasses on or close my eyes every 5 minutes. I just heard most of that movie  lol.

Anyone else have this problem?

Need to find that old news link...

Children in Japan I think it was were having seizures due to a popular kids cartoon. The rate of frames per second on the digital TV networks triggered seizures. It may have been Pokemon or one of those cartoons.

Unlike the rapid frames per second with digital TV in that childrens case where almost ALL were non-epileptic; Sounds like you are photo-epileptic. Flashing lights or rapid motion of light can trigger your seizures.

Do you have a pair of Polarized sunglasses to help with the long tube lights (flourecent) they could be a problem if you have not noticed that yet. People who are photo-epileptic often have problems in stores such as Target or Wal-Mart that use the tube lights.

Joy, I know :/

Found the news article mention I was thinking of.

"The most popular example of photosensitivity occurred in Japan on the night of Dec. 16, 1997. Close to 700 children were admitted to hospitals, mostly because of seizures that occurred while watching the popular cartoon Pokémon. The cause of this seizure epidemic was a very short (four seconds) rocket-launch sequence, with flashing red and blue fields occupying the whole screen, changing at a frequency of 12.5 per second. This experience taught us all these factors are interdependent and can have powerful consequences when they occur in combination."

quoted from an article by Dr G. Erba M, published 2006

Thanks everyone for your replies!

My mom bought me some super cool over eyeglasses polarized to the hilt sunglasses lol. I've noticed I get headaches inside of Walmart and Target. I have to wear sunglasses indoors sometimes.

Thanks again for the info and all!

I to have this problom and really cant go to many places especialy night clubs ,bowling alleys, big groucery stores, the movies it is so bad I'll fall in to a blank stair and then a grandmal fool blown it's gotten to the point that just driving down the street on the passenger seat of cores there is always strob lights in store windows that face the street and it never fales i fall and hit the ground .there should be warnings on movies and in all these places it would be nice.At least I think that the strobs should be taken out of the windows at least so I can feel safe walking with my children. It does help to cover 1 eye insted of both because it still continues to flash and the red flash is worse then the white what also helps is blue tinted glasses . I hope this helps and welcome to the boards .... Dragon Princess

Hi! Sorry I've taken so long to reply to your message. I've been off the net for awhile.

I agree that no strobe lights should be around. I never could attend concerts growing for this reason, I hate strobe lights lol. I have to wear my sunglasses on sunny days. It's been cloudy for about two weeks and it's been a blessing.

Thanks!

I know how you feel. I have that same problem, mine also comes from fireworks. Sometimes my seizures don't happen till up to 24 hours after I'm exposed. I've had to learn to deal with it, after I figured out what was happening. My doctors never mentioned anything about all this. I have found that if I get a good nights sleep before exposure, and try to take a nap right when I get home after exposure, that sometimes keeps my from having a seizure. Also looking indirectly at the screen, kind of from the side or up at it. Good luck, God Bless!!

I don't watch movies (theater or home) mostly because they bore me to death.... all a version of the same story in some format.

BUT, for those who do like movies, how about waiting for the DVD version, and trying them with sunglasses, or shaded glasses.....might help cut down the intensity of the flickering.
