View Full Version : Psychiatrist?

I have been going to a therapist once a week since January. She has been urging me to see a psychiatrist also. She knows how much I dislike the thought of going to a psychiatrist, but says she just wants me to go for an assessment and possible medications. I have been through the realm of meds (Buspar, Wellbutrin, Zoloft, Xanax)......I honestly don't want to try any more meds. I STILL believe that there is something just "not right" physically with me since having my hysterectomy in June. I was never depressed prior to that. Since then, my medical issues have been mounting!! My podiatrist even said that there is a common link with my health problems and the right doctor just has not found it yet.
So.....I'm curious to know what everyone's thoughts are on the matter of seeing a psychiatrist. What will a psychiatrist do for me that my therapist isn't already doing (besides prescribing meds that I really don't want to try!).
Thanks!

sorry that your feeling like this . P docs tend to be a lot more on the ball with meds and who knows ,he may be the one to find the connection . I would give it a try , it could be a blessing. P docs are just part of treatment , dont be afraid of going.

wishing you well Mizzy

Hi roz5,

I have heard that women are at risk of experiencing "psychological problems" due to hormones. Women experience it when they go through menopause, and the pre-menopause states. Also, because you have had a hysterectomy, your hormones could be all "outta whack". Have your doctors mentioned this? And if you have had problems before that required ADs, it could get worse with your hormones going crazy.
If your doctors haven't mentioned this possibility, talk to them about it.

Hope this helps, good luck!

Thanks for the replies!
I have been through it all with the hormones! It's a jungle!! My gyn is fabulous and has been monitoring my hormone balance every step of the way. She listens! In fact, she is the one who suggested I talk to a therapist; and the therapist, in turn suggested I see a "P" for possible medications.
I have had numerous hormone saliva tests done and the hormones will always be an issue. I just still believe that there is an underlying issue at the root of it all.
I DID call the psychiatrist today (the one whom my therapist recommended). Can't even get an appointment until JUNE!!! Once again...caught up in the dead end streets of the healthcare profession! I give up!!!

Check your insurance to see if there is another psychiatrist you can go see. The one your therapist "recommended" is just that, a recommendation. You can see whomever you wish. :)
