I have been taking it since january 13 of this year. I was given agriylin before but had sever itching and bad headaches so my doctor had taken me off of it last year and now we are trying the hydroxyurea. I guess it could be the meds but throughout any treatments i have tried I have never missed a cycle. I am 37 years old.

I had a hard time on the Hydrea, lots of stomach acid etc. It is considered a chemo-therapy drug so I would think it could cause a variety of things. But thats just me guessing. I know I am tired alot. Today is just a bad day for me. Take care, I hope you find out whats going on. Karen

Hello Newport1, I started on Hydrea on March 13th, and after reading your post it got me to thinking. I have not gotten my period as of today. The Hydrea has made me very tired to the point that I have to lie down when I get home from work. I have also had the nausousness, and some stomach pain. I know this medication is also used to treat some cancers so it must be very potent!!! I certainly do not want to stay on it, but platelets were over a million this month and dr. thought it was time to get them back down. I am 46 years old and I am sure I am peri-menopausal but to date I have yet to miss my period. I will keep in touch and let you know if I do get it, and if not that is certainly a question I will have for my dr. at my next visit. Hang in there, and God Bless. Rene24 :)

I have just started taking it, so don't know yet if I will have this problem, but before I even took one pill, I looked up side effects and it definitely can affect your menstrual cycle.

It is 4/16 and I have have not yet had a period since 2/20. thank you for your input and I finally did ask my doctor and he did say it would affect it. I 'm defintely not upset about missing it :jester: however, I am concerned about when or if it does come back I hope it doesen't floor me like the last one I had back in feb, and I hope I get a little warning. I don't like those kind of surprises.

I know what you mean.
Whether related to et or to nothing or something else, two months ago (when I was on vacation, of course) my period came a week early. Then, this month, it came a week earlier still - so two weeks early...I thought I was getting to the age where it would be a week or two later. So, since I just started hydroxy, I'm hoping that is the one side effect I might get.

I have sickle cell disease (not the trait) and have been taking hydroxyurea (2000 mg) since November of 2005. I have had regular periods up until January of 2006. Since then, I have not had a period AT ALL and have had two negative pregnancy tests (both blood) in March. It has now been three months and I am wondering if it is in fact the hydroxyurea since that is the only new drug that I've been taking. I am 34 years old and should not be menopausal at this stage in my life. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? ANY information would be helpful.
