I'm not sure this is the right category to mention this problem, but here goes......my mother is 61, white, and a little overweight. She has no history of any problems with diabetes, nor does her family. Recently, she has started having symptoms when she consumes sugar, especially in soft drinks. (She does not consume caffeine). After consuming sugar, she gets weak (as she puts it "in her chest".) Her heart also pounds and she has nearly no energy. She has not been seen by a doctor for this, and I was wondering if anyone here could offer some advice as to what might be happening. Thanks.

I would say that you should get her to the doctor .These symptoms could be caused by more than one thing .I know that you are worried so best to get a diagnoses from a doctor and dont put it off. Then you will not be so worried. I am a t2 diabetic and thats how sugar affects me but you really should talk to your doctor .
take care and let us know how you are doing mizzy

Hi get the doctor to give your mom an A1Ctest. no prep or fasting just get your blood drawn at any time of the day. That will tell you for sure if it's her sugar. While he's there get hime to check her iron level sounds like she could have anemia. If your Iron is to Low your heart can beat so fast at times it's scary. Iron makes red blood cells which carry oxagen to all parts of your body not enough oxogen abd your heart will pump over time trying to get enough oxagen Good luck
