Does anyone here take the bp med Sular? Has anyone ever heard of it? I have been on Hyzaar for several years with okay results, but for some reason over the past several months my bp is up (most recent reading 160/104). My dr. has decided to add sular to my meds (said I should still take the Hyzaar) and I was just wondering what anyone knows about it. Thanks.

I was prescribed Sular and for me the side effects were terrible. I had major swelling of my feet and sometimes my hands. I was completly wiped out most of the times, headaches also. I just felt awful on this med and my bp did not drop significantly either.

Hope you have better luck than I did.
Liz

dmmom,
I know that it is too expensive and that there are far cheaper similar drugs available.
SULAR is the calcium channel blocker nisoldipine, it is similar to nifedipine which costs a fraction of what SULAR does.

Look for these side effects:
headache
upset stomach
dizziness or lightheadedness
flushing (feeling of warmth)
fast heartbeat
excessive tiredness
nasal congestion
sore throat
but especilly, SWELLING of the arms or legs (ankles)

The maker, FIRST HORIZON, claims HUGE BP drops compared to other drugs...but at over $2 a pill it should do card tricks.:D
If it works as well as claimed there should be no need for the HYZAAR, a pretty weak combo drug that also costs too much. Just hydrochlorothiazide plus the nisoldipine (SULAR) should be all you need.

If that combo works well, then you are a classic salt sensitive hypertensive.

P.S. Whenever I see the word SULAR, my mind sees it as SULAR THE MAGNIFICENT and it's a mid-east warrior in the 10th century on a white horse wearing gold and silk robes waving a curved scimitar over his head. :jester:

Thanks for the input on Sular. I have just taken it for 6 days so far. I have gotten a terrible headache in the back of my head three times since taking this. Is this the kind of headache Sular causes. Also, thanks for the heads up on the price!!! I actually got samples from the dr. so I haven't actually had to purchase any yet. Also, do you know any specific blood tests or other tests that need to be done when on Sular?
The bp thing that really bugs me is that in Dec. I went to my cardiologist and my bp was great (again, I have been on Hyzaar for a few years). Then in January I went to family dr. and bp was way up - 165/104. (Chalked it up to too much holiday and not enough exercise.) Got it checked again last week and it was 160/104 and that's when he prescribed Sular. Am going tomorrow (Friday) for the first follow-up visit after taking the Sular so I am anxious to see what transpires!

dmmom,
Invest in a BP tester and test yourself regularly at home when relaxed. One is going to be led astray if the only BP tests are done in a nervous-making clinical setting once every couple months.
