Hi, Im Alisha Im new to this board, I hope someone can help me with this. When i first started having jaw problems it would just pop and crack when i opend my mouth but it has gotten worse now i can hardly open my mouth, and it is very painful when i chew or yawn, some times the pain is so bad i can feel it also at the side of my neck. the pain is only on one side tho, my jaw on the other side doesnt hurt, this has been going on for months, maybe like 5 months now. I went to the doctor and he said that it could be arthritis but im only 19 years old!!! he also said maybe i injured it but i dont recal anything, he gave me some antinflamitory to take to see if it goes away. so I looked up jaw arthritis and alot of TMJ things came up, the symptoms sound the same. its not anything to do with my teeth because i went to the dentist and got an x-ray (we thought it might have to do with my wisdom teeth coming through) but it wasnt. that is why i went to the doctors. will this go away? or if the antinflamitory doesnt work is there anything else i can do? could it be arthritis? i really hope its not. any information, advice or anything would be very much appreciated. Thanks

I recommend you see a tmj specialist. I was diagnosed with arthritis at the age of 16 and with tmj at the age of 22. I would also get an mri to find out exactly what you're dealing with. It sounds like tmj is a possibility. Good luck. I hope you find an answer. :)

Sounds like tmj to me. I had the scan done. All fine and so has many other people they were all fine. They found nothing. I have had tmj for almost 11 years now. You have my smpathy for getting this at such a young age. The best thing that has helped me is stretching excercises like touching you toes. Any kind of stretches except No jaw or neck stretches. I also take ibruofren when needed like Advil also I take coral calcium almost daily. Don't eat hard foods try not to chew your food eat soft food and avoid stress. I know all seems easier than done but, it will alliviate some of the pain. Hope this helps :bouncing: :bouncing:

I was diagnosed about three months ago with TMJ and I have tried almost everything. I am wearing a splint now and it has made the pain worse I am tired of being in pain and missing out on life with my children

My pain increased with the splints too. I was told it would it would go away as the jaw repositioned itself but I could not endure the pain any longer and stopped wearing them. My MRI showed arthritic changes in the jaw on the left side - but why does the right side hurt more than the left?
I too feel like I am missing out on life - I can't remember anything that happened for the last 2 years - like family get togethers or celebrations, graduations, births, etc. My family is tired of me being in pain and not being able to help and my friends are just tired of my chronic complaining. I am tired and long for the days when I was normal - which I took for granted. But do try to remain hopeful and not give up. There are answers out there and we each need to find them.
