Ds is 8 weeks old and sometimes it seems like he is holding his breath is this normal and when does it stop?

You know when your baby has to burp and they seem like they are holding their breath just before it comes out, its that type of thing

Tonight I was holding him and he was really tired I could tell, so he started to squirm ans turn his head back and forth, he seemed to be holding his breath so I pulled the paci out of is mouth and he breathed

I know that they have erratic breathing when they are newborns but for how long?

babies should not be having any real erratic type of breathing patterns.from what you described there could possibly be something going on that should definietly be evaluated by his pediatrician.Babies do strange things sometimes for no real apparent reason, but when it comes to any possible respiratory issues, this is something that requires rather immediate attention, just to make sure there is nothing really going on.I would make an appt with his ped and see what he/she thinks about this.it may be something or could be just something your child 'does'.but you need to be sure, thats all.hopefully this just 'is",you know what I mean?just be sure.good luck, marcia

Hey Valerie,
It's called period breathing and it usually continues til between 3 and 6 months. To ease your mind though, you may want to mention it to your dr. I know that I sometimes get really worried about my dd when she does this or when she starts breathing funny (fast, slow, etc). Anyway, try to not stress about it too much.

Glad to hear that.must have really been quite the relief.getting her in to see the doc was a really really good idea.ya don't want any possible breathing problems to go unchecked.Marcia

I just went to my pediatricain yesterday with my daughter she is 11 days old and I asked her the same question she told me that it is completly normal for a newborn to be doing this since there breathing pattern is not set and completly developed.. But if it would put your mind more at ease just call your doc and get reassured...
