Hello, I am a 19 year old female and over the last 3 months i noticed an increase in size where my adam's apple is. You could see it poking through the neck like a man's and i have never had a pronounced adam's apple before. It is sensitive to the touch and sometimes when i swallow it seems to get in the way and feel sharp. it isnt like a lump, it is actually that my adam's apple is just enlarged, i guess. I saw my GP and he gave me a CT scan of the neck with contrast, but it didn't see any abnormalities. It is really bothering me... Should i see an ENT and have a scope done? Any idea of what this could be.. i know i did a poor job describing but it is very strange.

My question is.. if i had a tumor or something there do you think it would have shown up on the CT scan or would it have missed it? i am going to make an appt with the ENT on monday.. i am scared i have cancer or something :(

Hi there
I have a friend who has lumps in her throat and she is freaking out as well. I did some research, and while im not a doctor, I think you should have a thyroid disease looked at... I dont think its cancer. Your thyroid absorbs iodine, thyroid cells are the only cells in the body that can do this. Now if they are absorbing too much, or not enough iodine, this will make the thyroid swell.
However, even though I dont think it is cancer,
if it is
the cancer is 97% curable, because of thyroids cells amazing ability to absorb iodine. Doctors can give you radioactive iodine, which only the thyroid cells will absorb.... killing them from within and eradicating the cancer. Because only thyroid cells will absorb the radioactive iodine, there is no pain, sickness or hairloss.
Good luck and hope that helped

Yes, it sounds as if your thyroid is swollen. It's a gland that wraps around the front of your windpipe, just under your Adam's apple. It can swell because it's either overworking or underworking. It wouldn't necessarily show up on a CT scan. You should ask for a thyroid ultrasound and/or scan.
Do you have any symptoms other than the tenderness on your neck? Any family history of thyroid disorders?
