Being sent back to the Cleveland Clinic for a visual evoked potential and a somasensory potential of right leg and arm.

My general neurologist basically said he couldn't help me anymore.Just happened to be that the Neuromuscular specialist I was referred to called to give me my last 2 blood test results.Ruled out Lupus and Reuynalds syndrome.
After explaining my appointment with my ex-neurologist she has scheduled these test. What are they? What is normal or abnormal.I was really shocked when she said they were going to do the rt ankle. There's no reflex and the foot is completly numb.I can understand the vision,I just got new glasses in January and now they are not strong enough. At least the bi-focals aren't.After my last flair up the vision has not restored itself.See eye Doc tomorrow.Any in sight would be helpful.

visual evoked potentials are cake.. they just attach these little electronic sensors to your head and have you look at a TV screen with different patterns and record the results of (i think) your eye movement and reaction time? ( someone correct me if i am wrong).. no pain or anything... but the sticky suff they use to attach the sensors is kind of annoying to get out of your hair after..

i have no idea about the other test you mentioned, never had it done..

Toni, they are both Evoked potentials. The right side stuff is to test CNS funtion from your extremities. Both (SSEP and VEP) test brain signals received from your eyes and extremities (how long it takes for the signal to register in your brain and such).
Toni, you may get a dx today!

Thanks, had test and the specialist will call within a week with results. The vep test got half way through and the tech stopped and ask if I had numbness, tingling, muscle spasms, fatigue and what meds I took and sent me across the hall for the ssep.Which was a little painful.Tech said to relax there was to much muscle activity going on,chronic muscle spasms will cause this.Even took meds before hand.
Another wait and see.

Toni, because I know what you've been going through I will say congratulations. Sounds like the VEP tech saw something. Yeah, the SSEPs are a little uncomfortable, I'd imagine they were worse for you than for me. I was able to relax completely (don't have muscle spasms). But again, you may FINALLY have a dx.

Lilc,

During the VEP at one point those black and white squares became a greyish blur. This happened in both eyes.I don't think this is normal.I know if the VEP comes back abnormal its on the Mcdonald criteria scale. What I have read the SSEP is another one of these test that are non-specific for diseases.Any info would be appreciated.

Toni- I'm gonna have to go back to the dx criteria to remember for sure, but as I recall there is a sort of "score". I think I recall it being 2 positive tests + clinical and the absence of other positive tests. It's kinda hokey, considering what you've been through. But abnormal EVPs counts toward a dx. I'm praying they saw something.
