I've had problems with blood sugar, but haven't been diagnosed with anything yet. Whenever I eat something with sugar in it I get this uncomfortable feeling like it's just "sitting there." I also have to urinate usually right after eating specific foods with sugar, such as rice or orange juice. I was thinking of administering my own glucose tolerance test (had one taken about a year ago and doctor doesn't think I should have another one) using a monitoring kit I bought, and I was wondering if anybody knew of anything I could take to replace the glucola bottle. Thanks.

It is not wise to do this test yourself. If you are really having problems with your sugar level, it is possible you could have a reaction requiring immediate medical care.
There are A1C test available at pharmacies that average the blood sugar over the past 3 months. This would be a safer test for you to do at home. It is a matter of pricking finger, applying to strip and then see the results.

Diabetes is'nt something to be taken lightly, there are so many complications that can accompany it. I would urge you to see a doctor to comfirm whether you have diabetes or not, believe me, you will feel much better knowing.

You need 75 grams of glucose. You would need to drink a lot of soda to get a similar effect. The easiest solution is to make up your own glucose load. You can buy it in powdered form from a pharmacy. Measure out 75 grams, put it in a glass, add water and throw it back. By testing every half hour for the next few hours, you will be able to see how high your blood sugar goes and how long it takes to come down again.

Hi.!
Many doctors do not use the glucose syrup test. They will take a sample of blood (on fasting) and send to a laboratory. Then they will give you the results of your average blood sugar for the last three months.
If your doctor won't give you a test, you could buy your own blood glucose monitor kit at any drugsstore. Price about $30.00 canadian. Then take your own BS test each day to see what your blood sugar is. Ask the pharmacist as to how to use the monitor, and what the readings mean. You simply ***** your finger and put a drop of blood onto the monitor test strip.
This will give you a fair idea as to what is happening. Take the BS test in this manner three times a day for a few weeks, write down what the readings are each day, and then discuss with your doctor. Or you can take the readings to your phamacist and show him/her the readings--they are quite helpful here where I live (On the Canadian Prairies)
Also, the large drugstores here have "blood sugar information days" where they hold small seminars (maybe an hour), and they will also at that time test your blood and tell you what it means.
It is good to be knowlegeable about your own body.
What do you mean that you have had problems with blood sugar but haven't been diagnosed with anything yet? Is your blood sugar above average or too low?
By the way, I have never had the glucose test (where you drink the syrup) even though I am a type 2 diabetic, and went to diabetic training seminars 5 years ago at a diabetic clinic in a large hospital. The diabetic clinics here do not do that test, as it can be very dangerous. They rely on the blood glucose meter--the blood sample being taken two hours after a meal; and also fasting blood sugar test.
Hope this helps.

Thanks. I saw glucose tablets at the pharmacy yesterday, and was wondering if it would be ok just to chew them or would it only work if you used the powdered form in water?

Takabe I really think you should not be taking any glucose test at home. I thoroughly disagree with Mark Munday that you could do this test at home yourself.
I agree with Mrbojangles--this is much too serious. If your blood sugar is already high, and you did the gluco drink or tablets, you can harm yourself--could even have a heart attack.
Pardon me for saying so, but let's say you took this test, then are you going to understand the results?
A good friend of mine went to the clinic to get this gluco test the other day, and they would not give it to him because his blood sugar was already too high at that point.
Diabetes can be a very serious matter--IMO I think you need some outside professional help.
