Hope someone can help. My 15 month old son has had 2 random glucose draws (looking for something not related to diabetes) in the last 4 months and 1 was a fasting of 51, the other 2 hr pp of 44!!!! Does my son have type 1? Or is he "pre" type 1??? They are running a bunch of tests tomorrow, a fasting glu, IGF 1 level, insulin antibodies, and an anti GAD. ANy information would be very much appreciated. Also, I have never noticed any hypo symptoms in him at all and T2 runs in my family. Thanks all!

The hardest part in all of this might be learning to detect the childs symptoms. Young children can have very different reactions like being very irritable and crying alot. These can be a typical toddler also so that makes it so hard to know what is going on.
I wish you the best of luck with the tests. Hypoglycemia in a young child isn't an indication of type 1 rather it is an indication of an enodcrine problem. The tests that he is getting tomorrow will give you the information as to what is really going on in here. Let us know how it goes

H.... 1 was a fasting of 51, the other 2 hr pp of 44!!!! Does my son have type 1? ....
Those are very low blood sugars. Type 1 normally is associated with very high blood sugars - because insulin production is dropping. In your son's case, sounds like too much insulin is being being produced. Let us know what the tests results are.

Cheers,

Mark

Yes, but isn't hypoglycemia or hyperinsulinism a precursor to diabetes? I checked his sugar all day today with my machine. Fasting: 82, 2hr pp: 114, 3hrs pp: 89 then again 2 hr pp: 107 then before dinner: 92
I'm so scared and confused. What else could this be?

It can be but hyperinsulinism can be an issue all on it's own. You put hypoglycemia and diabetes together simply because they are most commonly linked. Children can have hypoglycemia and never develop diabetes. They can have low blood sugars due to a problem with the pituitary gland. A child can have hypoglycemia after a fast that produced ketones or after a bout of diarrhea.
I think you are on the right track to get to the bottom of things. You may just find that he has rogue low blood sugars that his system self regulates. Good luck tomorrow

My daughter went through bouts of low blood sugar until she was 10 or 12 and eventually grew out of it. She does have low thyroid now that she takes meds for.

Good luck to you, I hope it all works out well.

Hyperinsulinemia can mean their is insulin resistance going on, which is a pre-cursar to type 2, not type 1.

Hypoglycemia can sometimes be a precursur to type 1 as well, but I doubt this is what is going on here.

There are a ton of causes of hypoglycemia in young children, and fasting hypoglycemia is not all that uncommon. I doubt your child is on the road to diabetes, but those blood sugars warrant alarm anyways sinply because they are so low.

Thanks to all of you! You have been so sweet and caring!! We went this morning and had his fasting bloodwork done. I have been checking him these last 2 days with my glucometer and he has been perfectly normal. His 2 hr PP were 102 and 107. He even slept almost 2 hours past his lunch time and I took it when he woke up and thought for SURE it would be low b/c he was lte to eat, and it was 83. I'm now sitting here with a belly of butterflies waiting for the phone to ring. Also, I thought I'd mention that right before he had his blood drawn (with the reading of 44) he was running around the waiting room, laughing and perfectly normal. Not behavior I would associate with a glu of 44! I know I would be on the floor! His doctor said that if the blood sits around for a while "the red blood cells sometimes "eat" the glucose." I have NEVER heard of this, have any of you? Thanks again! You all are wonderful!
