I just started Lyrica this week so it's hard to tell if I've had any improvement. I'm also on 75 mg. twice a day but my MD said this is a very low starting dose and he will increase it weekly, so maybe that is why you are not having any improvement yet.
I have to say I think my pain is a little better and more importantly, my mood seems to have improved, making it easier to deal with the pain. No side effects so far, but MD said there shouldn't be any at this low dose. This is my first medication so I have nothing to compare it to. Let me know how you do.

My husband just started taking Lyrica last week. His Neurologist started him on 50 mg a day for 30 days then he is to increase to 75 mg a day. The doctor told him it would take about 3 weeks to see any benefit.
I would give it a couple of weeks before I would stop using the medicine.
This drug is suppose to be much better than the Neurotin.

Hi delrae
I'm new to this board, I usually post on the Back Problem board. However, I do have nerve pain because of a rutured lumbar disc. I had a fusion surgery on 1/26 and was taking Neurontin before and after. I had to increase my dose recently so yesterday my doctor switched me to Lyrica 150mg twice a day, I don't feel it's working as well yet. But I have notices that I am VERY SLEEPY, I can hardly keep my eyes open. I fall asleep in the middle of conversations and while on the computer. How are you doing with Lyrica?

my dr said that the side effects would be less with the lyrica but i find i am a lot more sleepy with lycria then i was with the neurotin and really i havent notice any change for the better with the lyrica over the neurotin so i am not sure what to think .

See my previous post above but I am having pretty good results with Lyrica. As far as side effects, every time my dose gets increased I have a period of "spaciness" for lack of a better term and tiredness. It goes away in a day or two as my body adjusts. My MD started me on a very low dose - 50 mg. twice daily and has been increasing slowly. At three weeks I am just starting 75 mg. three times a day. Maybe if you are having trouble with side effects you would have more luck with this approach.

Hi delrae
Just wanted to update you on my experienc with Lyrica. The sleepiness has GREATLY improved. It does seem to be helping with the nerve pain. But the only difference I have seen between Lyrica and Neurontin, is that I only have to take it twice a day instead of three. I've noticed too that I'm unable to wait 12 hours between doses. The pain usually starts back up after about 10-11 hours. If I wait 12, I'm in tears. Anyway, I been reading from others that is can take time to feel the full effects of this med. I've also noticed that my dose is a lot higher than what others are taking (150mg 2x's a day). Hope you are doing better!!

I just started taking Lyrica two days ago and have the sleepy thing as well as the"drunken" feeling too.I'm on 75 mg 2x a day. Also on Tramadol . I really don't like the way this makes me feel and I hope it will go away as I get used to the drug. Both my reg doc and my pain management doc recommended Lyrica though so I am giving it a try. The PM doc has tried alot of things to try and help me,tens unit, diferent steroid treatments, trigger point injections, cervical epidurals ect. It's been two years since original injury but seems like five times that. I am really hoping the Lyrica can help me get some of my life back. I'm thankful for this board,I don't feel as alone as I did. :)

My husband was on the Lyrica for 2 months now. At the 75 2x day. He had no change in his pain level. He has been off now for a week and he can't tell any difference. The meds were a trial till he saw the neurologist. His appointment is next week. I'm afraid that due to the severity of his diabetes neuropathy the meds won't change his pain at that dosage. We were told that in the being.

Just an update on my husband and Lyrica....Neurologist increased meds to 150mg 2x day.....no change in his pain level.. still the same ..no relief...problem now... the Lyrica has spaced him out and his is very dizzy and lightheaded. It hits him about 2 hours after taking and lasts for about 3 hours. He's going to continue with the Lyrica for about 2 more weeks if it continues to have these side effects and no relief from the pain he was told to stop...the Lyrica is not for him.....they will try another med...

After taking a dose, I get that dizzy/drunken effect same as you describe. I'm at 300mg twice a day now, and after being on this dosage for about 3 weeks that side effect has not gone away as it did with the lower dosages.
When I was working up to this dosage, sometimes the s/e would go away before it came time to raise the dose again.
The (semi) good news is, that it seems to be working. I would guesstimate my pain level is down from about an 8 to about a 4 from the Lyrica. I also use Lidocaine patches to try to take care of the rest of it.
Another good side effect I've noticed.... my abnormally high phobias are a lot less... kinda scarily less... I used to be so afraid of bugs of any kind that I literally passed out once when a caterpiller was spotted on my shirt... now, I was in a swarm of wasps asking my son to get me a flyswatter (haha not really smart!) It's more like that invincible effect you get when drunk.

Hi Everyone; new member here but old timer to pain!! Added Lyrica to my drug regimen about 3 wks. ago - had that 'spacey' sorta feeling the first couple weeks on it. Increasing the Neuropathy pain is the fact that I have Severe degree Osteo Arthritis in both feet, both ankles, and both knees, as well as lots of foot problems; SEVERE Plantar Fascitis, heel spurs, bone cysts, incredibly high arches, SEVERE muscle spasticity, Chronic-Severe Myofascial Pain Syndrome, and Arachnoiditis. There are other health problems, but these are the ones that are multiplying the foot and leg pain.
After gaining HUGE amounts of weight on Neurontin, I've recently been blessed with being able to lose 50 + lbs. !! :D Adding to food restrictions, after years of being basically home-bound, I'd slowly improved enough that I'd begun to walk in the evenings........something I was STRICTLY FORBIDDEN NOT TO DO!! In 2000, I spent the majority of the year off my feet in a wheelchair (the type that keeps your feet elevated in front of you, making you look like a human tow-motor), and with both feet in immobilizers up to the knees. At that time I was told to NEVER, EVER, take up walking or running as exercise as my feet and ankles simply could never tolerate the impact of such. BUT, the greed of some success at weight loss, and recent over-all health improvements, helped trick my mind that this rule no longer applied. How terribly, terribly wrong I was!!
Even though my feet were hurting viciously months ago from the walking, I was terrified of either gaining weight back (and I've yet to reach my *goal*), or stopping the walking would somehow render me home-bound or immobile again, I pushed on through the pain!! Just how many of us here do this [U]EVERY DAY,[U] anyway?? It was at this point that I should have had the good sense to stop and things may not have gotten out of hand, but I didn't. Vicious foot pain became even worse, and began to spread up higher, and higher, until pain was totally unbearable......keeping in mind I am a chronic pain patient and on pain medications and Topomax (anti-seizure) already! Barely able to even get from one room to the other, I had to "confess" all at the next Doc's appointment. He said there was no doubt it was the Neuropathy and gave me 1 month's worth of Lyrica to try.
All in all, I have to say that my experience has been a positive one with it thus far! Admittingly, the "possible side effect: weight gain", was quite terrifying when I saw it!!! The increased pain that I caused myself is by NO MEANS gone, but then I've lived with chronic, severe, pain on a daily basis for 10 years!!!! Every time you think you can't take any more pain, you learn that you can, indeed. My dosage is 75mg., 2x daily for now, with strong possibilities to increase, if/when needed. As I've played the 'pain game' for soooo, soooo, long now, I know that MANY, MANY, side effects of new medications you're beginning disappear within a short time, if you can hang with it. It depends if the side effects are something that's tolerable or not, and largely - whether you're working and out on the road or at home!!!
Best wishes to each for more good days than bad! :) I can tell this place is going to be a wonderful place to learn, share, and to find a shoulder to lean on!! That's something I DEFINITELY need as people who do not have this disease just absolutely do NOT GET IT, Huh?? But, that's a topic for another post! Take good care and apologies for the length of this initial post.

Sherry is the Lyrica working for you? How many days have you been on it can you tell a difference. No one will answer my question I want to know how many days it should take before it starts working like making the pain go away. I want to see if it is working for me. I dont want to give up on it already but i need to know how long it take before is should at least feel a difference

Shimz,
I started it on June 13th, day of my last Dr. visit, at the dosage of 75mg - twice daily. So that would make it 3 weeks ago I began taking it. The maker of Lyrica recommends it taking 2 weeks, as did both my Dr., and my Pharmacist, to begin to get the benefits of this drug.
*IF* you have been on it at least this long/longer, and see NO improvement in pain levels whatsoever, it's possible that you either need a higher dose of Lyrica ......or another drug added to aide the Lyrica.........or need to drop it all together. That's what is SOOO frustrating with pain management - trying to find the right drug regimen for *YOU*, as we all respond so uniquely!!
If you have been on Lyrica at least 2 or more weeks and have NO pain relief from it Shimz, it's time to call your Dr.!! My pain is not *gone*, only 'quieted' by this drug. But, being I have SOOOO many health issues going on, that's the best that can be done for me, unless I want to be an absolute zombie. Let us know what happens and hope you find better relief, and soon!

Hi Everyone
In Sept/05 I switched from 2700mg a day of Neurontin to 300mg a day of Lyrica for the treatment of RSD. I didn't find the either of them did anything to help the pain. Last month (approx 5 weeks ago) my PM Dr. increased my dosage of Lyrica to 600mg a day in hopes that maybe that might help. Well it didn't help the pain. Tomorrow I see my PM again and I'm going to tell him to get me off the Lyrica. Since I started on the higher dose my experience is that the Lyrica is horrible! I have never felt so miserable. First of all, about an hour after I take it, I feel like a zombie. All I want to do is sleep. Not only that but I have found that it affects my coordination, every muscle in my body aches, and worst of all I have found that it has affected my vision. I have also gained alot of weight since starting on the Lyrica. Hopefully there is something else out there for me. At this point I'm willing to try just about anything.

The only time I noticed this type of thing was when I was taking an opiod-based cough syrup for a cold for a short time. I couldn't sleep for love nor money. The rest of the time I struggle to keep myself awake... if I sit down for any amount of time I fall asleep, but if I keep going I'm ok.
Are you taking anything in conjunction with the Lyrica?

When I was pain-free and young (ahem a while ago), I weighed 330 lbs... as a first step to losing weight I dropped regular sodas in favor of diet sodas. In the first month i had last 35 pounds. That was the ONLY thing I had done differently. And I really didn't drink all that many.. maybe 1-2 a day.
Diet sodas CAN make a huge difference.

Just another update on my husband and his side effects from 150 mg of Lyrica 2x day...We had thought that the side effects from his increase from 75mg 2x day would pass after a couple of weeks...it is now 5 weeks...no change in pain level but everyone is noticing that he is very depressed, confused, unstable in walking or moving about, angry, forgetful and the "spaced out" is still there....he is going to the doctor on Thursday 7/13 to find out what to do...we know that some of these effects are from being in pain ALL the time but his condition seems to be deteriating...his neuropathy is from diabetes and sugar levels are the best they have been in months very close to "normal" all day.

I am taking Ms Contin, MS IR, Inderal, Diovan, Lipitor, Hyoscyomine, mostly for RSD/Neuropathy but I also have a heart/lung condition. I can sleep at night, I just don't "want" to go to bed when I feel so good and I think I can get more done. I have felt horrible for so long, maybe thats why I now have energy.
When I read the post about the husband suffering from the side effects of Lyrica....it raised a red flag. I was almost put in a nursing home at the age of 32 because of toxic effects of Neurontin. I was unable to walk, dress, feed myself, form sentances and had severe memory loss. When I forgot to take my Neurontin, suddenly I felt the cloud lift. A pharmacist discovered that it was making me sick. Please make sure if your gut tells you something is not right with your husband....get another opinion from someone who did not put him on the Lyrica.

Husband went to drs yesterday because of the horrible side effects he was having with the Lyrica...he was told to decrease his dosage back to 75 2xday for 3 days then 50 2xday for 2 then to stop.....this was told by the dr that did not prescribe the meds....we are to call the neurologist today and advise that we are stopping and request a different drug....because Lyrica is not going to be of any benefit to him because he can not tolerant any dosage over 75 2x day...and the drug is not helping at all with his pain.. as our other dr explained to us what he was experencing was a severe side effect reaction because we had went well past the time frame of "adjustment". More than 2 weeks of any side effect at that magnitude is too long.

I have severe peripheral vascular disease, (PVD)Rheumatoid Arthritis, a history including Guillain-Barre Syndrome, and lots of things ending in 'itis.' I have allergies to many drugs, virtually all narcotics, and was seeking an alternative to drugs by visiting a pain management physician. To no avail. He prescribed Lyrica, 25mg 2x day. I took one that day, and another the next a.m., and was stoned! This could be, if not already, the next street drug. I'd never take it again. Nor would I see another pain management dr. They are of the ilk of rheumatologists, cannot practice medicine w/o a Rx pad.
I now have a sample container of 43 tabs of TOPOMAX 25 mg, and its doubtful I'll try this, either. I also have Tri-Geminal Nerve issues, aka Tic Deloureaux, extremely painful, I have costochondritis, never get headaches, thank you God, and am not diabetic. nor do I have heart problems.
I'm not opposed to alternative medicine routes, just wish those who know me would discontinue suggesting bee venom for the RA since I'm allergic to bee venom. Dandelions are not the answer, either. Major differences between Osteoarthritis and RA.
Any sugestions would be apreciated.
