I have PTSD, chronic, severe and have suffered from it for nearly the last 10 years.
I've been on 150 mg of Effexor each night and Ativan prn. Just today, I was put on .5 mg Risperdal at night and 1 mg Propranolol each morning.
Does anyone have experience with these drugs or this combination?
I'm considering re-adding (on my own) Buspar into the mix and see what happens.
I'm fortunate enough to have access to the same resources/research the psychiatrists use since I'm in the field and grad school for something similar now...
It's such a tough decision.
Any advice appreciated.

My general feeling (and I have close ties to the field as well) is that if you have/are going through counseling and have made progress or reached the point that you have worked through the issues by being totally honest, then it is time to try different med combos. I have severe PTSD, am still in counseling to keep everything in check (it took 12 years to get to the point where I don't NEED counseling at least once a week...I used to live for that hour a week). I take 120 mg of Cymbalta, 150 mg of Wellbutrin XR, 3 mg Clonapin, and PRN --> 10 mg Ambien or 1 mg Xanax. I also have MDD, which accounts for the sky-high dosing of anti-depressants. My son takes risperdal and it is a wonder drug for him.
I would try the medications (except putting yourself back on the buspar unless the dr. has told you to). You only want to try one new thing at a time because you want to know what it is that is working. Start one of the new meds for a couple of weeks and see what happens. If you are not significantly better, then start the other one on top of that. If that still doesn't work, talk with your dr. about the buspar.
Good Luck!!

I used to take the Ativan, and I don't know how you would be able to take that w/ Buspar and go to school. I don't know your dosages, but I had to get off the Ativan because I could not retain much new information at school while being on that, and I also used to be on Buspar, and that wasn't as bad, but I don't think I would take them together with everything else unless your doctor told you to specifically. I also have ptsd and Mdd, as well as somatic disorder, and I can understand the temptation to take something to get through the day, but you still need to be very careful when dealing with psychotropic drugs because when I was first diagnosed they had me on quite a cocktail and I believe it did some permanent brain damage to me. Some stuff is great to forget, but it sucks when family tells you about times when you were there that sound fun that you totally have forgotten, which happens to me alot, some of which I attribute to all those meds.
Good luck and be carefull.
