Hey all! This is my post post in this forum. I'm 28, have fibromyalgia, TMJ (surgery x 5), RSD in my TMJ's and face. I'm also a student, starting nursing program in 1 month so I'm really in a rush to figure out my problem. Here's the scoop: 1 month ago I had to have a reconstructive eyelid surgery and after the surgery had to sleep propped up for about a week. About 1 week post-op I sat down to play the piano and when I stood up 15 minutes later had a sharp pain in my low back/hip area (left side). I went to the chiropractor that afternoon, twice the next week, and twice the next week with little relief. Finally I saw my regular doc last week who said it's probably a muscle problem because it comes and goes now and isn't constant anymore. She gave me muscle relaxers and NSAIDs and said to see how it goes. I'm not getting relief. Sometimes I'm fine and have no pain, and then WHAM. It's like a knife being pushed in right above my hip. I'm still seeing the chiro.
Has anybody experienced this? My parent's both have had disc surgery, but everybody says I'm too young for that, and the pain doesn't really radiate down my leg like it normally would for disc problems. Just trying to get to the bottom of this. Also, this morning I tripped and fell on my hand, spraining my wrist. Normally I could have caught myself, but my back just wouldn't let me.

Kayte,
I don't know about the first part of your problem but the painful part about hip, leg pain is definite sound familiar. You probably have sciatica pain coming from a bulging or herniated disc. I have this leg pain in the calf area and left button for a year.
#1MRI test showed I had herniated disc at L4,L5,S1.
The orthopedic doctor sent me to two months of Physical Therapy,Chinese medicine, and pain medication and nothhing works. The pain is unbearable sometime to the point of depression. I relieve the pain by taking hot bath and walking in the pool. but this is only temporary relieving the pain. At first, it comes and goes. but now this sharp pain is constant; making agitated and irritable all the time. This has been going since March 2005.
Just had an MRI#2.
I will see another doctor this week for consulting doing microdiscetomy. He will compare MRI#1 and MRI#2 before making his decision for surgery.
It's bad i know. This is just my story.

HI, and welcome to the forum kayte. Well, you have done everything the right way up to this point. I think the next step is to ask your family doctor to do an MRI. If he/she won't, then look for an ortho or neurosurgeon. It still may be a muscle problem...it could be that the muscle is very tight and putting pressure on a nerve. Or, it could be a bad disc. There is no such thing as being "too young" to have a bad disc! I can't begin to tell you how many posts I have read from kids who are l8, l9 years old and who have bad backs. I think, for you, it is important to have the MRI and find out for sure what is going on.
Good luck; I hope you will let us know.

After you've ruled out disc issues, I would recommend seeing a neurological chiropractor. Not many around, but they are super educated, and know their anatomy inside out.
I'm having the same problem (from pullinig weeds!!). He traced the muscles being affected from the top all around my hip down to my knee and did a non-invasive procedure.
Probably will have to do a couple of sessions, but I've never had anyone educate me like this before. Made total sense.
Can't do pain pills, so I found some homeopathic remedies for the pain & inflammation.

It could be the fibromyalgia causing the pain. It is a muscular pain syndrome, so when your dr says it it muscular, he may be right, and it may be the fibromyalgia.. I believe that proper excercise / stretching can help this condition over time.. A friend at work has it and a while ago, could not even sit down, but is doing much better now... He told me that he does mild but consistant excercises (stationary bike and walking perhaps).
CarolEye... what types of homeopathic remedies are you using?
Bye for now..
