hi , i've been off of zoloft now for three months, but its been a rough three months. i did withdraw from it gradually as i should, but the worst of the side effects still exist when i become upset, and that is the feeling that my nerves go through what seems to be some sort of a spasm. its not a steady thing it comes and goes and when i am calm its all good. but if i get upset, cry or am just angry, there goes the spasms, my doctor can't explain it, and nowhere does it indicate this as a sideeffect in the the brochure for zoloft.. so any advice...would be really really appreciated. thanks

Hiya
I've just recently come off Zoloft myself, and I've noticed that my anger sometimes gets out of hand. I don't even think it was this bad before I was on it in the first place! Don't know if it's a side effect of it, but I'm sure not happy about it, but I don't want to go back on it to see. Guess I'll have to wait it out and see. Good luck to you!

hi - i had the same anger problem when i weaned off of trazadone (which, i think, is a tricyclic rather than a ssri. my pdoc suggest that maybe the depression was coming back (oh - i wtill take 40 mgs. of celexa a day - the traz was for sleep).
i know someone who also had the spasms and anger from zoloft withdawal.
it is JUST begining to be accepted that antidepressant indeed have a long withdrawal process.
like valium in the 60's and qualude in the 70's - ad's have been touted as totally non-addicting.
imho - anything that has withdrawal effects like ad's do is "addicting" to ones body.
that said, i hope this goes away soon - i think my friend was ok after about 3-4 wkks - although she still is very short tempered (not like her)
perhaps your doc could put you on a mild tranq on an as needed basis for when you have the spasms?

I can now turn and see how far I've come,
and look forward to the distances i have left to travel. (John Edward)

Hey.......I have been on Zoloft for 4 years now my highest was only 50 mg. I think im ready to be off of the med, so for the past 2 weeks I have been taking 25mg, and starting Monday I will be on 25 every other day for a few weeks then im done. I had ONE side effect, i felt really really dizzy one night ( 2 days into cutting dose down) and I was in bed so I began to pray to Jesus and felt much better after 10 minutes. I was talking to my husband who is studying to be a paramedic and he said its because your body is so use to being on it that it reacts. REMEMBER YOUR NOT GOING CRAZY......OR YOU DO NOT HAVE A TUMOR!! I believe that my weight (50 pounds) will come off after coming off of Zoloft. Yea I also gained 50 lbs from this medicine. I guess I have also been a little spacey, and moody, but I know that it will take a while for it to be all out of my system. Has anyone been off of Zoloft for 4 months and doing well??? Let me know!

Simby is correct about the history of some of these psychoactive drugs. The thing is, when they claim non-addicting, they are "technically" correct. Physical dependancy(as one poster said, the body gets used to something)is more accurate, because real addiction is more along the lines of psychological/social stuff, like seeking euphorias and compulsive drug behaviors.
Physical dependancy is only one component of addiction. Since most of these drugs only cause physical dependancy, without the drug-seeking behaviors, they get away with claiming no addiction because the other factors are absent with prescription doses. Pure semantics!

Hi everyone
I am considering seriously going off ZOLOFT for the second time because of weight gain (and I train every day and eat healthily). What way can someone please suggest is the advisable way to wean off them? I found that initially I lost weight but then both times gained.

The best way to taper off is decreasing your original dose by 10% every week or two. This is very slow, but you can speed up the taper if you don't experience withdrawal. If you do, yo need to slow down even more.

I recently stopped taking my Zoloft cold turkey. Mainly, because they do not make a generic, and I can't afford to get the refill at $116.00 a pop. I believe it has been almost two weeks since I popped my last "happy" pill. I refrained from telling anyone because my whole family (mostly who have no experience with anti-depressants) were in favor of it! I confided in my sister last night and she was actually (unusually) very supportive of me. She said that I had been nicer, spunkier, and awake more in the last 2 weeks than I had in the last 2 years.
The thing I noticed about taking it was that similar to most of you, it made me indifferent to things that before made me crazy. Sounds especially: large trucks driving by, people clipping their finger nails, eating carrots, banging their silverware on their dishes while eating, and about a million more. I would go batty and it almost felt like my blood would boil. I guess I have dog-ears. ANYWAY (enough of that).
Some of the symptoms I have noticed are...well, none! I guess I am lucky or just not paying enough attention. Either way it is better than when I was on it. Yes, it helped with the sounds and it kept me from being b-tchy! But, it took away something very special to me! MY AMBITION. I lost my ambition. I gained weight; I slept all the time, and tended to want to drink (that is alcohol) more often than I do now. It totally numbed me. Everything that made me, me went into a sort of hibernation. Well, I am back now. I may never be as good as I was before I started taking Zoloft, but if I can help it I will never be as bad as while taking it.
Good Luck to all of you! We should embrace who we are and get a second opinion before letting some DR. write a scrip. and send us on our marry way to zombie land.
Little disclaimer: Some of us probably should have some sort of medication. BUT, if it does not seem to be working for you ask your DR. to try something new.

Hi Everyone, I noticed this chat when I was searching for some info. I've been reading the Zoloft chats on this board under the "Drug Interactions" section. There are a lot of people (myself included) discussing their withdrawal from Zoloft now. Just thought I'd let you know it might be helpful to check it out. Best of luck.

Just thought I should mention this to you guys - before I was diagnosed with depression, I thought I had some sort of irregular heartbeat or something because I kept feeling the same thing you are describing. It's like someone electrocutes your system or something for just a second. Sometimes, you might just look in a different direction and all of a sudden - TWITCH - there it goes. I thought it was my heart.
When I went to my doctor I mentioned that I was also noticing some symptoms of depression (crying at the drop of a pin, anger, social issues, thoughts of suicide, etc.) he sent me to a psychologist. The shrink agreed that I was definitely depressed and recommended 150 mg of Zoloft. The "twitches" went completely away.
I have been on Zoloft now since 1997 and am doing great. I've dropped my dosage down to 50mg/day. However...ANYTIME I forget to take my meds - even for a day - the twitches come back.
Therefore, I really don't think it is "withdrawel" from Zoloft that is causing them. I think it is the fact that our bodies need the meds to fix the chemical imbalance.
Just my thoughts on the discussion!! Let me know what you think :)

I disagree with you babs. The twitching (or zaps as we like to call them on the drug interactions board) is a sign of withdrawal from the Zoloft. Withdrawal side effects begin 26 hours after not receiving any Zoloft. Zoloft has a 1/2 life of 26 hours so if you miss your medication for a day, you will begin to feel the zaps. This is a serious drug with serious side effects when attempting to discontinue usage. I have been trying to wean myself for almost a year now and it is a very slow going process. The best way to wean off of this drug is to shave a little bit each day for two weeks. Two weeks because it took 2 weeks to fully build up in your system. Then to shave a bit more for another two weeks, etc.
I would like to put out a warning to those that want to come off of it due to weight gain, etc. Please be careful. Only shave a little piece off or you will have some very uncomfortable side effects. Please visit the drug interaction board and read a thread entitled "WARNING - Zoloft withdrawing". I copied a passage in a book I had been reading which explains how serious the side effects of withdrawing can be. Some have chosen to "fluff" this warning off, however, I do know firsthand that this passage is correct.

Yea I agree about the feelings of withdrawl from Zoloft. I dont think its because ur body needs it from a Chemical Imbalance. The simple fact is that PFIZER neglects to tell the whole truth about withdrawal from that nasty medicine. I was on it for 4 yrs and have been off since 27 days, and i still feel zaps here and there, and my mood really SUCKED at first, but has gotten quit better now. My mind is getting sharper, and the extreme fatigue is nearly gone, I would say try something other than Zoloft.
Thanks

Were most of you prescribed Zoloft to help overcome a temporary "down" in your life, like a death or other major life change? I have to wonder if we treat depression too early and don't give the body a chance to recover on its own, that is when the withdrawals hit the hardest. There have been times when I have gone off the meds due to varying circumstances and during those times, I went back to feeling the same way I felt the day before I started taking Z.
I don't know, I guess I'm a Zoloft defender only because it kept me from doing something drastic to get rid of the "pain." I would have taken the drug regardless of the fact that there are withdrawals when you go off the drug. My doctor did not hide the fact that it would be difficult to go off the drug and made it very clear to me that when I was ready to stop taking it, I would have to drop down slowly. So, I think maybe we should be looking to our doctors to give us the information we need, rather than the drug manufacturer.

I was on Zoloft for close to 8 years. I even took it throughout my pregnancy, but at smaller doses. I was also taking Xanax at the time of my pregnancy and I had to quit that cold turkey. That had horrible horrible withdrawal symptoms. I continued the Zoloft for another year and just felt it wasn't doing anything for me. The Dr. dropped the Zoloft and put me immediately on Lexapro. I had no withdrawal at all from Z, but it may have been cuz I went directly to another antidepressent. I just quit cold turkey taking the Lexapro. I'm not even sure why, but I guess I wanted to try it drug free and see if I could do it. I get these brain zaps constantly, which I think is the withdrawal from the Lexapro. They are disturbing, but I can deal with them. I'm going to try this for a bit longer, drug free, but I tend to get angry at the drop of a hat and the tiny tiny things that never bothered me before, frustrate me so bad now. My doctor is wanting to try Wellbutrin, but I do have anxiety and panic, so I'm kind of scared to try that.
Oh yea...while on Zoloft..my sex drive was negative 0, but since I've been off of it..things are much better.
Good luck!

Was anyone else out there getting the zaps BEFORE taking anti-depressants??? I can't be the only one. The symptoms that I get when I go off the meds are the same symptoms that prompted me to go on them.

Well all of you have terrified me when it comes to Zoloft. I just started taking it today because I suffer from anxiety attacks, depression, and OCD. scaredbuthopeful, I have had AWESOME success with it. I was just trying to discuss the possibility that it isn't so much a withdrawal as it is a return to the "old way of being" per se. I actually had problems with Paxil and Zoloft has been wonderful!

Hey, yes I did have good results with Zoloft, but the bad things happened slowly. Like, I gained 40-50 lbs with it, i became hypoglycemic, and........my sex drive was wayyy low, and it was VERY hard to reach Orgasms. The other part is this: Since ive been off......one month and 5 days im no longer hypoglycemic, ive lost 8 lbs, and im finally ZOLOFT free!!!!! The w/drawal is ROTTEN! Head shocks, dizziness, mood swings, etc..........i finally no longer feel crappy!!!
If I had to do it all over again.......I would have never started it. Im now taking St.Johns Wort everyday, its awesome and NATURAL. I do warn ppl about becomming addicted to Zoloft. The docs will tell you its not addictive but its NOT TRUE! The month it took me to feel better, I felt like a drug addicted, looking for a "fix" the urge is gone and all the side effects too. THANK U JESUS

I've been taking zoloft everyday for 5 years now and in the last 2 months I slowly decreased it to every other day, then 3 times a week.
Now, I am not taking it at all. But now I feel light-headed very often and sometimes I get this feeling of confusion.
I also read on this page http://www.zoloft.com/index.asp?pageid=44
that zoloft is not addictive nor habit forming. But I believe that's wrong because so many of you, plus myself, are experiencing side effects after we stop taking it.
Are these side effects normal??

Did that feel like skipped heartbeat for a second? Were you tested for mitral valve prolapse? Mitral Valve can be serious but usually it is not and can cause such irregular heartbeats, even anxiety symtoms and such. It is diagnoised with a special test, called Echocardiography. Depression is a too easy diagnoisis today when there could be physical stuff instead. But Mitral Valve is pretty common and usually isn't serious or needs treatment. But it's presence is sometimes overlooked since anxiety/depression is so popular these days with the medical community as the explaination for everything.
Zoloft withdrawal is notorious for these symptoms too, as everyone has pointed out.

I was taking Zoloft for about 8 years because of family and personal problems (at one point 250 mlgrams) I had also gained 30 kilo in weight but thought this was from inactivity from my back injury.
In the last twelve month, I have been weaning myself off Zoloft and was down to half a 25 mlg per day.
In October I stopped taking Zoloft and was put onto Avanza. Within 3 days I was experiencing the worst side effects imaginable!!
This is when I started getting the electric shocks thru my body. So I stopped taking the Avanza as well. I am still getting the electric shocks even though it is nearly 8 weeks now.
I also 'felt like a druggy looking for a fix' also 'felt crappy'
I still have the light headedness, squelshing sound in my brain as I turn my head, also I can hear the blood flowing with every heart beat! I used to get heart 'flutters' and these would cause panic attacks!
Thankyou to every one for their input into these message boards, because you have answered my questions as to why/what these 'shocks' are.
The Dr just looked at me as if I was stupid and needless to say I don't go to him anymore and I have seen a Rhuematologist (S) in the last week and he says I have Fibromyalgia (I had already self diagnosed)
I feel I have had F/M for a few years now, but never had electric shocks till I stopped the Zoloft!
I have also lost a few kilo in weight since stopping the Zoloft! So, Zoloft does pile the weight on!
I have a barrage of X-rays and blood tests to be done in the New Year (to eliminate other problems) and I presume the Rhumy will prescribe other medications. But no way will I accept another antideppressant!

I have been on Zoloft for 5 years and recently
tried to wean off it. I was at 150mg at max about two
years ago and was taking 50mg/day since. I took three
months to wean off. After being off for a month, I started
to have anxiety attacks, which I'd never had before. So now,
I'm back on the stuff. I assume that month's time allowed it to
get completely out of my system. I'm feeling a little better now, but
still kind of "foggy". It just wasn't worth trying to get off of it.
I really do not want to be on it the rest of my life, but what
does a person do? I sure don't want to go through that again!

Jd,
I commisserate with you! I tried to wean myself down yet again and suffered a major anxiety attack. I now have a few Xanax in the house in the event it happens again; however, I went back up in dose on the Zoloft again. My choices are being addicted to Xanax or being addicted to Zoloft. I think I'll take the Zoloft for now. I used to get panic attacks when I was in my late teens/early 20's, but they faded away with time. Now, I find myself back in the same boat again. :(

Amy,
I can totally relate. I am so angry that I can't function. I keep dredging up terrible things that have happened to me throughout my life to justify this "anger" that I believed Zoloft had suppressed. Now I just think my body and brain are going through withdrawl.
I'm exercising and feel good during and immediately after.
Does anyone else know about food or activities that can help get the seratonin flowing?
Dinny
