If you are in the U.S., COBRA should be available to you. I think you can keep it for 18 months but I could be wrong about the time. Anyway, you can get it for quite a while after you leave your job. It's not cheap by any means but at least you will keep your insurance.

I think it was somewhere around $500 a month. It's been a long time. You would receive that info from your previous human resource dept. or whoever is in charge of benefits.

I do not want to get your hopes up, but I read in a financial magazine (and I have heard this on tv or radio) that insurance companies CANNOT consider pregnancy a pre-existing condition. I would suggest calling a couple of insurance companies and asking them w/o giving them any other information, just to find out. Good luck!

Just a little info...... my sister n law wasn't covered by her husband's insurance because they conceived 2 weeks before he was covered with insurance. I do think that most companies consider pregnancy a pre-existing condition. I myself added extra disability insurance at my job when I was around 2 months pg and it didn't cover the pg.
You definitely should qualify for COBRA though. You would be responsible though for the entire premiums your company paid for the insurance, which could probably run you around $400-$800/month:-(
If I were you, I'd see if I qualified for a medicaid insurance card. My sister qualifies for one and she works too. Check it out.

I used cobra once a long long time ago and it was like 200 or so dollars it was something like that.. you can try medical.. yeah it really sucked I called a few places to find out when I was first preg and they could not give me covarge because it was a pre exsisiting condition it really sucks.. I always said you could lie.. but then they will find out.. so I would try the cobra and then maybe medical they will cover you.. but that is only if you qulify

I was in between jobs when I got PG and had no health insurance. My new job would not cover me. When I tried to get individual health insurance I was told PG was a pre-exsisting condition. I did not know what to do and ended up getting on my states medicaid program. I was lucky and qualified...(just barely!). My pregnancy and birth didn't cost me a thing..I would check into that before I paid for COBRA

Hi! I work in human resources so hopefully this answer will help you. It all depends on the contract that your company has with the health insurance carrier as to whether or not pregnancy is considered to be a preexisting condition. At my work, for example, pregnancy is not considered to be a preexisting condition for health insurance. To COBRA your old insurance, it is (on average) around 102% of the total monthly cost of insurance. This includes what you paid as the employee (if any) AND what the company paid toward your insurance. At my company, for example, single insurance is $267 per month so to COBRA that insurance it would be around $275 (give or take). I would simplly talk to the human resources department at your new job and ask about preexisting conditions. You don't even have to disclose your pregnant yet if you don't want to, just ask if the health insurance has any stipulations for preexisting conditions and what those would be. This will help you make a decision. Also, your previous employer only has 14 days (legally) after your last date of health coverage to give you the information about costs and how to COBRA, etc., so if it has been longer than that, I would give your old employer a call and ask them for that information. Also, whoever said that COBRA is good for up to 18 months is absolutely correct AND you can include the baby when you have him/her (it will increase the cost of course) but that is still an option. Please let me know if you have any other questions and good luck with your baby!

HI
The same thing happened to me, you will just have to pay yourself for the fisrt 90 days.
most company insurance's take on everyone no matter what there past, this is the main reason's alot of people get jobs with insurances invouled in the package. As they wouldn't be able to meet the payments otherwise,
I had a baby born at 28 weeks so i was a real high risk in terms of insurance but my company just had to take me on the policy after i had completed my 90 days.
Good luck i'm sure something will come up and if you really can't afford it Medicade will pick up the bill, i would get this all sorted as soon as possible so it doesn't cause to much stress.

I did some research on COBRA and pregnancy related insurance issues a few monthes ago.

Pregnancy cannot be considered a pre-existing condition IF you have had group insurance continuously for some period of time (i cannot remember the exact period of time) and you cannot have a lapse of more than 60 days. So, if you have group insurance, get on the COBRA for that 90 days. It is probably pretty expensive, but will save you a ton of money in the end.

If not, there is medicaid, but many doctors and hospitals dont accept it anymore so choose your doc carefully.
