Hey guys,
For those that dont know me I'm 3 days post-op from C5/6/7 posterior fusion, Also removed 2(C-7) screws from anterior plate ( ACDF C-4/7 4-2004)Also used my bone from right rear hip which was a suprise, He was going to do an exray and find the best site in the front as I've had both sides rear used before, But he was hoping to harvest up front. I'll find out in 2 weeks
Anyway,I feel pretty darn good considering. There's almost no pain from the hip which was another suprise. Everything I've heard lately says it's painful, goes to show how different we all are, huh? Also very little to complain about from the anterior site, I got a nice smile going most of the way across my neck, he went through the other side to remove the screws Amazingly, I can swallow better, Most of you know I had a couple loose screws in there. That could be all in my head (pun intended) , but I'm gonna go with it.
The posterior site is DEFINITELY tender, OMG. But it has improved steadily giving me reason to be optomistic!!!!!!!
As we all know, stuff is gonna happen. I'll do an update sometime
The thing that gets me though, I had 3 different incisions, was under for 4.5 hours, and was released in 32.5 hours after the surgery. Wild
I also want to thank all my buds on here for your support, it made a big difference.
Take it slow....Mike

Hi MB:
Glad to hear that you are recovering nicely from your cervical surgery. Do you find that the posterior approach to your surgery was better than the anterior approach? I am having a multi level surgery and when having it before they did it from the front.
Thanks for your help and keep improving!

dang, do you have any parts left that haven't been poked, prodded or carved upon?
though amazed you were released so quickly, glad to hear you're at home and doing as well as you are. i'll be thinking good thoughts & hope to hear soon of steady improvement.
take care.

Mike - glad to hear from you - hang in there -- you say your incision is side to side? My posterior incision is up and down, but then I had multiple levels worked on.

Mike,
Good to hear your doing well. That sounds like a heck of a surgery. 4.5 hours! Mine was like 2. You had a lot of stuff they had to fix tho.
Keep us posted on how your doing.

Hey thanks Ember and JC and Sunny
The incision on the back of my neck was up and down. The one on the front was horizontal and is 5 or 6 inches long now.

Hi mb
Sounds like you are in your usual good spirits, and that has to be a good sign.
When you feel up to it, I would like to know more about your operation. How is a posterior fusion done - is it still a disc removal with a bone graft, or are the bones fused along the sides or back of the vertebrae? Are there any plates used like for an ACDF, or rods or other hardware? What condition is it that requires the posterior vs anterior approach?
Don't mean to ask so many questions, the main thing is that you are through it and doing well. But, if/when you feel up to it, '...inquiring minds like to know...
Best wishes for a good recovery -
Bob

Geez, Mike, you're recovering from THREE surgeries. That's a value shopper! ;)
I'm happy to hear the screws are finally out before something got perforated.
And basically released a day after 4 1/2 hours of surgery?
You are tough as nails, my friend.
Keep us updated!

Hey guys,
Thanks for the kind words.
To try to answer some of your questions. I'm no expert but in my case, I had an ACDF C-4/7 that failed at C-6/7. C-5/6 didn't look too healthy either, It had a diagonal crack completely through it. The disc space was completely filled with bone plug though, so it would have likely been OK in time. It had been 2 years so I didn't trust it. They did the revision posterior for a couple reasons, there was a significant amount of resorbtion at C-6 that made a repair at that level unlikely to be successful with a anterior approach. Also, there wasn't much suface left to work with as far as installing screws and a new plate, so they decided to go with the posterior.
They put pedicle SP? screws in C-7 and another kind, I don't remember the name, in C-5/6. Then they connect they 3 vertebre together with 2 titanium rods that attach to the tops of the screws. Theres a little section in the rear of the vertebre that they scrape the surface off of and put in the graft bone. I found it interesting that they put a layer of donor bone on top of the autograft bone creating a sandwich effect to protect it. They also took my bone from a spot that had been used many years ago for a fusion I had done a little lower down, T-10/11.
The whole things facinating aint it? Makes me want to be a Doctor when I grow up!! But by all accounts, thats a long way off.
It is painful as hell in the back of my neck, but oddly I have no pain in the hip or throat. Course I'm only a few days in. More will be revealed.....
He'll be taking out the staples (hip and back of neck) in 2 weeks. I'll get a chance to hammer him with questions then. Hey, if you folks can think of any, let me know.......
Anyway, my necks killin me (what a suprise) so I'm gonna close this up.
Take it slow.....Mike

Glad to see you are doing relatively well ;) and in good spirits  I go to the surgeon Tuesday and anticipate having a C5-7 ACDF. I'm aiming for July (once I'm at my employer one year, 7/11, I get 8 weeks of 100% pay if I'm out on disability :bouncing: ). I had a L4-S1 about 13 years ago that went well. Did they give you the option to stay in the hospital longer? I am wacky but I would prefer a few days in the special hospital bed before heading home to my traditional bed.

Mike,
Wondering how you're doing nursing the three wounds.
Gotta be tough, I know that. No fun right now.
Just wanted to let you know that the Titanium Plate gang is thinking about ya and we're actually cutting a CD. The lead singer suffered damage to the layngeal nerve, but those fools in Hollywood say it sounds "fresh." Maybe you'll be ready for the huge U.S. tour beginning in July.
Those airport metal detectors are gonna be a hoot! ;)

Hey Guys,
Lost my dsl for a while but I'm back on line. Hope eveyone is doin good, of course Funny is in good spirits as usual!!
Well I'm 3 weeks or so post-op and doin all right. I have heard of so many folks that had problems with their hips after graft removal I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. The only thing botherin me down there are those damn stapl;es. I did have one heck of a bruise but very little pain...knock wood!!
The anterior neck scar is about about 1.5 or 2 inches long it lines up pefect with the old one on the other side. They're maybe a half inch apart, I measured it at 5.5 inches total but you really can barely see it, and what do I care anyway. That kind of stuff dont bother me. No pain from that by the way.
It's too early to tell about the back of the neck, I'm still in the hard collar so I dont have much rom. Again, the staples suck, and there is still quite a bit of pain w/movement but I'll take it. I'm anxious too get into therapy, and see where we're really at!!!
My best too everyone, and hey, I've missed you guys......

I'm doing real well! Feeling good, pain not too bad most of the time, getting around just fine.
Able to do stuff around the house and run errands and such, and to spend a little more time on the computer without hurting. The one thing I keep doing is my neck by bending down and looking into the clothes dryer. You might think I'd learn not to do it after the first, oh, 30 times, but I'm apparently going to have to make a sign that says, "Hey, stupid, don't bend down and look in the dryer."
A family situation got me back to driving three weeks out from surgery. Still can't look far enough right or left. Backing out of a parking space is the hardest thing for me to do. I'm going to attempt a 4-hour drive on Thursday, really keeping my fingers crossed that it doesn't turn out to be a horrible mistake. I know I'll be pushing my luck, will have to pace myself, probably take six hours instead of four, but I really hope it works out OK.
I have to emphasize again how glad I am that I read so many of the posts BEFORE surgery, as having some foreknowledge of all the weirdness helped so much. I find that a big yawn will hurt my neck. Sneezes feel as though my spine is being ripped out of my body. Can't move around much to music or, strange, sing too loud or talk too long without some pain or at least a feeling of "tired". I occasionally get tingling all down my right side, including ribs and leg, and now I get the stabbing shoulder blade pain on the left instead of on the right. I had at least one day where both hands were noticeably tremoring. But everything is temporary, and I know I've still got quite a ways to go for recovery.
First x-ray will be next Friday. I'm a little nervous about the whole no-collar thing and all, but am hoping that the x-ray will show what it should.
So far (knock wood) I'm very happy. In fact, I'm doing so well I feel almost guilty about it.

Hi Ember and others,
Glad to hear you're doing well. As usual, just take it slow, it'll come!!
I hear you about being forced into driving. I let that happen the first time, but not this time. My kid has been walking to work. My girlfriend has been awesome, I love her so much. And she must really love me, I know I'm a pain in the butt, not a good patient!!! Dont tell me I cant do it!!!!
I got my staples out on the 10th, what a relief. I immediatly regained some ROM that I had lost because I had a couple loose staples that the collar constantly irritated making me hold still as much of the time as I could. It's 4 weeks post-op today and I feel pretty darn good, mind you, I do almost nothing. There were 4 people in the room with me when I was at the docs so I didnt get to ask alot of questions, but he showed me the exrays from the day of surgery and theres alot of junk in there, 12 scews, the plate, and 2 rods. That should hold things together! It looked like he cleaned out the space where the old fusion failed, but I forgot to ask him.
I should have kept my big mouth shut, My hip hurt like hell yesterday. It came out of nowhere and is still tender today. Shoulda knocked wood!!!
I'm anxious to get back out there......maybe too anxious. I need to take my own advise I guess.
Mike

I still don't know if it was allergies or the same sinus infection as the first time right after surgery but it is better!
Thanks ol' buddy! I read some of your old posts trying to catch up, but theres alot of them!!!!!
Sounds like theres a few complications. Hope you're OK????
I'll read more when I get a chance.
