View Full Version : grr...biting of the tounge

Ok...long summary short...I'm 23 I have had seizures since I was about 5 and when I hit puberty I devolped partial seizures with my already exsisting grand mals. My seizures are always in my sleep too. Well when I hit puberty I started waking up in my sleep and being aware when I had them. WHich isn't too fun! When I was young, I never knew. ANYWAY...I'm controlled and so on but occasionally I bite my tounge in my sleep. I know thats a sign of a seizure...but I am a stressed out person right now, I have grinded my teeth in the past, I have often nightmares and so on...
I went to my neuro today and he said the only reason people bite their tounge in their sleep is if they had a seziure. I'm finding that hard to believe. B/c if this is true, it means my grand mals are back and they have changed back to me not knowing I've had on vs waking up and having them. I'm probably in denial lol And it doesn't happen often, maybe once every 2 months, but I just feel stress can do ALOT to your body besides seizures. One good thing...I haven't had a partial seizure in a year :) And I THOUGHT I hadn't had a grand mal in like 6 yrs. So you can see my frustration and denial that they're grand mals just from biting my tounge. I don't feel different or out of it the next day either.
I'm just confused! And lately I realized I don't want epilepsy anymore! (not that I ever did!) But now it's turned into a "why me" thing.

I have complex partials, awake and asleep, and bite the sides of my tongue and mouth with those- they've been witnessed, and were not grand mals. It is annoying to wake up to the tell tale signs of night seizures, and the foggy funk for a while during the day, but I'd rather seize in bed than in front of other people :) Partial seizures can cause 'chewing', which is the problem- tongue doesn't know to get out of the way !!

That stupid tounge what is it thinking! lol Well...the only reason I think they're grande mals is because my partials I have ALWAYS woken up to. And I am too busy coughing and trying to breath than to be able to chew my tounge during it. But I guess I am just depressed and trying to find a reason that biting the tounge is a reason for something other than a seizure! But you're right I'd rather have one asleep and not know vs being in front of someone :)
