Hey,
I've been getting some very weird black discharge for the past few days. My period isn't due or anything so it's not that.
I've just started new antidepressants and the method of birth control I use is the coil (IUD).
Could any of these contribute to it??
I'm confused.

Hi xpit
There could be a couple of reasons why you are getting the black discharge.
Could you be pregnant?? Having the coil fitted there is still a chance that you could be pregnant and the coil would cause black old blood if you are pregnant.
The black discharge is old blood...... which means you may have a slight infection that could be easily treated or you may need a D&C just to give the womb a good clean out.
It is owrth going to the doctor as i have the coil fitted and it can cause infections in some people.
How long have you had the coil in? As it should be changed every 5 years, therefore if you are having black discharge this can be a sign the coil needs changing.

Thanks for the reply :)
Hmm...well, I've only had the coil in for around 6 months so it doesn't need changing yet. I had some teething problems with it at the start but there have been no problems for ages.
As for being pregnant, it's very unlikely as I have the coil and my bf and I have also been using condoms.

Maybe you could go to the doctor and ask them to do a swab to rule out any infections.
When i first had my coil fitted i started to get what you had, i had a swab done but that came back fine.....i was told that sometimes the coil can cause this. It never cleared up, i use to get it on and off and had to wear panty liners sometimes.
When was your last smear test?
Good luck and i hope you manage to get it sorted.

Thank you very much. I hope it does too!
I've never had a smear test before as I'm only 19.

As soon as a person becomes sexually active they really should start having smear tests as the increase of cervical cancer is now there.
I know it may sound daunting, but go and book yourself in for a smear test just to be sure and rule anything out :)
If you are nervous about it or unsure there are lots of people on here who can offer you support :)

thanks, i've been sexually active for a year now and in that time I've been pregnant and lost my baby so I have had a lot of check ups and that kinda thing.
Do you book it with your GP or at a hospital?

You may have touched on something there.....
first of all im really sorry about your loss, i have personal experience of it and i can understand what you went through.
The black discharge could be left over from when you lost your baby, it is possible to have some old placenta left behind that didnt come away from the loss of your baby......this happened to me a long time ago and i had another D&C because of it.
You can organise a smear test by going to your doctor and asking him to make an appointment for you, or if the surgery has a nurse on site you can ring and book the appointment yourself. Bu ti think it is worth reminding your doctor about the loss and the discharge and see what he suggests.

Thanks again, Sharon.
Well, I don't think it will have anything to do with that because I lost the baby in August of last year.
I will go to my doctor soon and I will book an appointment for a smear test too.
The discharge is now accompanied by a lot of cramping and soreness. It really hurts to walk now!
