View Full Version : Another ? about test results

I had a bowl or raisin bran and skim milk and decided to test my glucose at 1 hour to see the effect this type of snack would have.

First, the new batch of test strips did not seem to absorb the blood as well as the previous batch so I discarded test #1. I got a reading of 178 on test #2. This would be a plasma reading of 198. About 3-4 minutes later I repeated the test and got a reading of 159 (178 plasma) I am sure my pre-snack level was near fasting levels.

Is the difference in these two test results significant (178 and 159)? Can your blood glucose drop 19 points in such a short period of time or would it be explained by the fact that the test is not that exact?

I guess raisin bran was not such a good bed time snack.

Hi
Another quick note(I already have a lengthly one to you on the dawn effects)
Check out the carb per serving and serving size on the box of raisin bran. Then also figure in approx. how much milk you used. I think raisin anything is high in carbs, but I'm still learning here.
Good Luck

Hi Chris, Raisins is grapes and grapes is a no-no for diabetics. So are plumbs. Another thing, make sure you get a decent blood sample without squeezing the finger too hard. You need serum, not cellular fluid that comes by hard squeezing. Now you see the error accumulation. Next time the doc's lab tech does it (they generally use a bayonet and have little mercy) be ready with your unit. I'm sure you'll have plenty of blood left over from her/his poke. Get some urine test strips, and when your sugar is high, check to see if you're passing any thru your kidneys. This is important. If your kidneys are, they can drop a few points of blood sugar in a hurry....it'll be in your bladder. God bless, Oldguy

Remember also, Raisen Bran is a slow acting carbohydrate. You can eat it but have no affect immediatly. If your insulin such as H is taking it down before it actually kicks in, your reading will decrease like you viewed.

You're probably tired of hearing about my little experiments but this one has me totally confused. More on the pasta meal. My home glucose meter reading at 1 hour was 190, at 2 hours 200, 12 minutes later (because I didn't believe it, 166), and at 4.5 hours 172!! This was a first, I have never been anything but normal at 2 hours but then I have never tested after this type of meal. I can a glucose control which was perfect. I know 172 aftr 4 hours is not normal for anyone. My fasting level this am was 77. I guess levels like these would account for the borderline high Hemoglobin A1C. Thanks for any opinions.

Chris
