Hello. My mom is 66 and is about 50 lbs. overweight. She is on medication for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, HRT, and adult onset diabetes. She has no motivation at all. She has no energy or strength. She is so weak she can hardly walk around the block. She shuffles when she walks. Her daily blood sugar averages around 160. She is on every diabetes med. at the max. dose. She doesn't want to go on insulin because she has been told it will cause weight gain. Weight is the main culprit in this whole thing. There is no diabetes in our family. The last two weeks she has really gone down hill. She has even less energy than before. She is now almost totally sedintary. I go to her house every day and make her walk around the block. She walks at a snails pace and can't lift her feet. All she wants to do is go home and sit down. She now has no appetite and feels nauseous and dizzy. She says she feels car sick. I am sorry for going on and on, but I was hoping someone might have some advice. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/confused.gif Her docs blame everything I just told you on the diabetes. Oh, by the way she is taking Wellbutrin, an antidepressant. She has been taking it for about two weeks with no change. Thanks in advance, Janet :(

Hi-Sorry to hear about your Mom. What cholesterol med is she? If you check out the High Cholesterol Message board, you will hear all kinds of horror stories on the side effects of cholesterol drugs called statins. They can make a person feel totally rotten and weak. I know, because I was on 4 different ones that did the same thing to me, but the worst was Lipitor and 2nd worst was Zocor. Now we know that everyone is different in how they react to the same drug, but so far I have also been on Baycol, and Niacin, and now finally on Pravachol. It is this last one that is finally not giving me any weakness and tiredness problems-yet!.
Reading that message board surely opened my eyes. This may not be your Mom's problem, but it's worth looking at.
Good Luck to you both.

Hi Janet,
I generally read every post on the diabetes and high cholesterol boards each day, but when I see so much good advice in the replies, I generally don't reply. JB is on the nose here, and the only thing I want to ask are what are your mom's lipid numbers, and the average of her blood glucose readings? Also, what are the meds? and what are the dosages? The only other thing I can add is I pray for help a lot. My habit started on the battlefield in Korea, and I find comfort in it still. God bless and help you and your mom,,,,,Oldguy

Thanks for the responses, JB and OldGuy. I will find out what meds mom is taking and how much and write back, so please keep checking. I would be very interested in what you two think. I believe she is taking Lipitor, JB. I have always thought her problems were the result of the meds. she is taking. Thanks, and I will write back as soon as possible. Janet

Hi!
Don't overlook the hypertension medication as the cause of her problems, or at least adding to them. You didn't mention which one she is on, but beta blockers can do this. Sometimes they start patients at a high dose and it knocks the oomph right out of them. It does something to "motivation". I know I took a fairly low dose of atenolol and was miserable. Toprol, another beta blocker, does not seem to be doing it to me.

I've heard the diuretics can also have a similar effect.

Hi Janet, As far as exercise goes, do you have a swimming pool available in your area. I go to a club that has a pool you can walk into or be chair lifted into. They have arthritis classes in the pool for people who can't exercise on land. I rehabed my hip this way. It gives you such a sense of freedom to be able to exercise and move without pain. Just a suggestion.
