I have a major problem. I suffer from bulimia and desperately need help. I recently went to the hospital with slight chest pains. They did x-rays and cat scans and found abdominal distention, caused from my bulimia. That was enough to scare me into stopping my vomiting, but that only lasted for about a month, and I started up again. For the past year, I have told my psychiatrist that I suffer with it, but he said that there is no one in our area that specializes in eating disorders, and that the nearest place is Atlanta, which is an hour and a half from me. I have also told my primary care physician about my problem, and he said the same thing that my psychiatrist said.
I really do not know what to do. Can you help me?
Regards,
Shelly from Georgia

You need someone who specializes in eating disorders, clearly. Research it on your own - sometimes it is amazing what you can find. I drive 50 minutes to my therapist - more out of choice than necessity, but after a while it doesn't seem so bad. In the long run the right person is worth it (in spite of the gas prices!). There has to be someone - good luck and be strong!

I would suggest that you talk to that psychiatrist about a possible over-the-phone counseling deal, where the doctor charges you for the amount of time he spends with you. It would be more local and also much more convenient for you. Otherwise, I would seek counseling online somehow or (even) drive those 90 minutes to see someone. It's all worth it to rid of something that's troubling you.
