View Full Version : Learning to walk again???

wtwct mentioned my "learning to walk again". Ok. I'm ignorant, and I guess I'd better learn. I knew pre-op: 1. I could not tolerate the pain and the rubbing. 2. If this doesn't work, I could do a fusion. 3. If the fusion doesn't take, I could lose my foot. 4. Never to self-diagnose and/or treat again! Period. I didn't know until after the fact how long I'd be NWB.
Will I really, really, have to "learn" to walk again? Those who know, please explain this to me. I mean, it's not as if I've had a stroke, just a plate to lengthen a bone that was shortened by a break. ???
Thanks, and sorry if I appear stupid. I'd rather ask here, now, than have my boss freaking later. I did tell him 10 weeks. Maybe I need to tell him something else. I'm SO thankful I found this group!!!

I forget what your problem was but I can tell you that you have been compensating in some way for the painful foot. You'll realize it as soon as you get to walking again. Things won;t feel right...because you are used to the other way. My right hip was in knots all because I had been compensating for my bad left foot. When the left foot was healed, the hip rebelled at being made to walk in unision with the other. And you may have been turning you foot, lifting a toe, all sorts of things you just haven't noticed. That's what is meant...

Thank God. Scared me!!! LOL. I had fx fibula at talus, Dr. did osteotomy, plate & screws to lengthen shortened fib. It was almost a year ago, and, yes, I've compensated, my Dad teased me about how I walked, and I realized I'd been turning my foot sideways to get less slippage and pain. In the end, I was getting pain in my knee and hip, so probably would have been a wreck soon if this Dr. hadn't been willing to help. So, I will be able to walk, it will just be odd for awhile? How long was it for you? Kim
