This is a question to the self-employed members: what individual coverage do you have and from what insurance company? Anyone taking advantage of Medical Savings Account?

Having been a student, artist for long time, then recently self-employed (and now a S-Corp/ Inc) I haven't had any HI in a long while but finally it's dawning on me I should get one. Not having paid much attention to insurance dealings in the past I haven't a clue and it seems to be jungle out there...

I've done some searching as I want get some insight before I make my decision but any info regarding indivdual/ self-employed insurance coverage is scarce at best. I need some tutorial... and would like to see some examples.

Also what is good/ better coverage and who are some of better companies? I don't want to skimp on health insurance as I can imagine the pain and frustration down the line with a lesser policy (yes I've seen and read some horror stories...)

Thus far I'm thinking about going in the direction of taking advantage of MSA... but I'm absolutely clueless as to where to begin and I just don't know whether I should throw myself to any insurance broker/ agent yet...

I'm furiously searching and reading up any thing I can find, trying to gain some insight but I'd appreciate it if any of you guys would share your experience/ decisions...

btw I'm in IL... Thanks in advance.

I am self employed also. And haven't had any health insurance in a long time. I can't see any light at the end of this tunnel. My state, NY has insurance for people who are self employed or who work for companies that don't offer it.
But when I checked it was way out of our budget - $400. a month just for me alone.

My husband is a veteran and uses the VA. But it does not cover emergencies or stuff like that. So I'd have to drive him to a VA hospital if he needed help fast.

I have OXFORD $20 co-pay, 50% drug coverage.
It costs me a fortune ($602/month) but really covers everything...all tests are free, all doctors and specialists get $20 and any hospital stay costs $250 total for the stay.

It's only in the Northeast though...NY, NJ, CN, PA...maybe MA and RI?

I love it except for that one day a month I have to write the check.

Lenin, how did you get Oxford as an individual/self employed policy if you don't mind me asking?

I'm in NY, my husband is self employed (S corp, only employee). Health insurance is killing us. We go thru a company called SBS (Small Business Services) who put us in a group for rates, however, they just raised our rates to.... hang on to your hats... almost $24,000/year! Yes.... you read that correctly! He makes more than what is allowed under the NYS plan, but not enough to pay those rates!

For the first time, I fear we will be without health insurance. The only other plan I can find around here is GHI, no office visits paid, skimpy lab/tests, and the kicker is my local hospital doesn't accept it.

Help!
