I've had a sore throat for a past couple days and it hurts to swallow. I looked in the mirror today and saw a white lump where it has been hurting.
I have no health insurance and no money so i cant really see a doctor...
does anyone know what it might be and what i can do about it?

It sounds like it could possibly be Mono.
I started waking up with a sore throat and seeing white stuff in the back of my mouth for a few days right before I was diagnosed with it in college.
I would maybe try to see a doctor, cause they might need to give you antibiotics or something.

What is mono? what does it do? how bad is it?
is there anything i can do other than seeing a doctor? i have no insurance and no money.

White stuff in the throat is generally pus, which indicates some sort of infection. It could be strep throat, some other bacterial infection, or a virus. Mono, by the way, is caused by a virus, and is not treated with antibiotics.
You could also look up tonsil stones (do a search on the boards) and see if that sounds like what you've got.

Well I guess I'm an idiot then for suggesting the consult with the doctor.
In my opinion, that's what is of importance here to tell this person, not to point out that somebody is wrong about whether or not antibiotics are used in treating Mono.

Certainly if the white stuff is the result of an infection rather than tonsil stones, then a visit to the doctor is in order. The doctor needs to determine whether the infection is bacterial or viral in origin. If the infection is bacterial (like strep throat), then antibiotics will be prescribed. However, if the infection is viral (like a cold, mono, the flu), antibiotics should not be expected or asked for, so as not to add to the strains of antibiotic-resistant bacteria running around out there.
If the sore throat and pus do not go away or continue to get worse, you really do need to see a doctor. If it is bacterial, they can prescribe an antibiotic that will make you feel better. If it is a mild viral infection, it should get better soon (think like a cold). If it is a more severe viral infection like mono, there can be other complications that you may need to be aware of.

Okay, I talked to Krysta because she is so so so smart. :D
She told me some things to do and what to make sure I don't eat, etc.
My throat is feeling much better. It doesn't hurt nearly as much to swallow. I can feel it a little, but its only even noticable if I'm trying to tell its there. There is a problem though... that white bump thing is still there. What can I do about that?

Hello. The condition sounds a lot like strept throat. The things that this krystal told you can help lessen the soreness a little but the bacteria is not eradicated. When you wake up in the morning, is the soreness the worst? If it is, that sounds more like it. Mono can cause you to have a sore throat because of the inflamed lymph nodes but it does not cause a whiteness. Strept throat on the other hand does. Also, check the roof of your mouth for red spots. The doctor will prescribe you an antibiotic that you will have to take until the bottle is completely gone to ensure the bacteria is completely wiped out. In the meantime here are a few things you can do: You may take acetaminophen(tylenol) to get rid of aches, pains, and fever. You'll want to have soothing drinks, like tea and warm chicken soup(anything warm). It's best to avoid spicy and acidic foods, such as orange juice, because they could irritate your tender throat. If my suspicions are correct and you do have strep throat it is very important to get treated right away because it can lead to rheumatic fever and then rheumatic heart disease which is something you really don't want to end up with. Good Luck. Be careful about playing with your health, without your health theres nothing. God Bless.

I had strep throat a couple weeks ago and my throat was extremely sore and my glands were swollen... when I swallowed it felt like there was a big lump in my throat.
