Hello everyone.
I had toothache for around a week and it gradually got worse as everyday went on, so i got an appointment to see my dentist. The problem was that I had a deep filling which had got to the nerves.
I had a root canal 48 hours ago. Once the anaesthetic worn off, i was in agony for around hour but then it calmed down and the day after it was fine with just a slight ache every now and again.
But now the second day, I have the exact same toothache as i did before the root canal. Is this normal and will it stop or do i need to go back?
With having the nerve removed i expected that it wouldn't be sensitive but it is, its sensitive to cold but thats the only thing that will take the pain off. I have to hold a mouth full of cold water over the tooth and the ache goes for around 10 minutes, but then it comes back.
Am I having normal reactions to this treatment or is there something wrong?

Your situation is completely normal. Root canals put a lot of stress on your gums, nerves and muscles. It is completely ordinary to have pain for two weeks or longer after a root canal. It takes a while for everything to settle again. Did you get your crown done too?

Hi, I am in exactly the same situation as you. I had a root canal done on Monday, I felt a little better yesterday, and started getting really bad pain again last night and today. The tooth is extremely sensitive to touch and constantly aches. I contacted my dentist today and asked her for advice and she said that this isn't a problem as a root canal produces inflammation and bruising around and inside the tooth and this will cause you pain for at least a few days and the only thing to do is to take painkillers until it settles down.
I have another appointment to go back for them to examine me again next Tuesday. They advised me to get a drug called Cataflan for the pain. I have never heard of this drug but I suspect it must be a trade name for something else. I'm in Costa Rica so I get all kinds of weird names for mostly familar drugs. All the best with it and keep me updated.

I too am in the same situation. I have had root canals done on 3 teeth and had to have them extracted. Now even now the teeth are gone and I still get pain rediating right to my ears up to my head. Dentist don't know what to do with me and I don't know where to turn?? This is an ongoing problem now for 2 years and nobody seems to be able to help me. My health has also detoriated since having these root canals done but of course my doctor does not believe me that this has affected my health. I have seen numerous dentists and they can't seem to help me. I am at my wits end also. I have tried to deal with the pain but it's really hard at times. My doctor does not seem to think I need any pain medication. I just thought I would let you know your not alone. If you do find somebody to help please do let me know. I live in Canada Ontario. I do not have insurance and this is very expensive and feel I should be able to get help with all the money I dished out. Anyway do let me know if you have suggestions.
Thank You

I have just returned home after another visit to my dentist. Since my last post, my toothache has got worse. Today is the worse it's been, the pain is unbearable.
My dentist had a qiuck look, said he didn't know what what causing it. He prescribed me some antibiotics and I have to go back on Tuesday. So fingers crossed I should be ok.
Down side is that I cannot drink on these tablets and we're supposed to be going out tommorrow evening. Oh well small price to pay i guess.
I'll keep you informed of my progress.

Hi Sue, it sounds like you might have neurological facial pain. Try gabapentin, it may help... Good luck!
