Hi! :)
Im on singular tabs and two inhalers ..Ventolin and Pulmicort. The latter causes me to have oral thrush regulary, I have followed the advice I got from the Pharmasist and the Doctor about swilling my mouth out after use etc..
But I still get the problem. It causes my asthma to get worse, when I have an attack of Oral Thrush. (I think The thrush lands on my tubes also and makes me cough) once I take med to get rid of the Thrush My mouth gets better and my cough goes!
Anyone else have this problem?

I'm on Pulmicort, but fortunately, I haven't had thrush. I do rinse my mouth out after each use. Maybe you're just more sensitive to the Budisonide. Perhaps your doctor could suggest an alternative asthma medication.

I take my Pulmicort morning/night...then I brush my teeth, rinse, and spit. :P

I JUST started advair and was told to rinse becuase of potential thrush, but the idea of brushing too makes sense. Since it was my very first time, I don't think I breathed as much in and a bunch felt like it went right on my tongue. So I'm wondering if inhaling "correctly" makes a difference, and I think I'm going to brush too.

Yep, I have major probs with it. A few months ago I had a problem...I had tonsilist...which would bring up my asthma. So with the extra puffs and the antibiotics for tonsils, I'd get rid of tonsilists, but be left with thrust, which would bring back the tonsilist again. Ended up not being able to stomache food cause of it and got put on 'Nilstat'

Still currently having bad asthma (Had my tonsils taken out a few months back) and my doc has doubled my preventer dose (I'm on seretide) and now put me on steriod pills. Still got the thrust prob, but I just take Nilstat when it comes back.

And btw I do rinse...I've tryed different liquids too...water, listerine , coke etc. I found coke works the best for rinsing.

Yes, I've been using Advair for several years and have been having a horrible time with Thrush. After I use the Advair, I rinse my mouth. Then, I brush my teeth, rinse again, and then rinse and gargle with mouth wash. I've also tried taking caprylic acid along with acidophilus. I don't know what else to try.

I called my doctor's office and left a message asking if I could try serevent instead since it didn't have the corticosteroid that causes the thrush. The Nurse called back and said the doctor advising rinsing your mouth after using it. DUH!!! I was furious with that remark.

So, now I use the Advair until I get thrush and then quit using it for a week until it goes away. The week I don't use it, I really abuse my albuterol, which probably isn't that good for me, but it's better than dealing with the Thrush.

If you find a solution that works, PLEASE post it. I'm desperate.

Cheri.

Thank you! My 2 year old daughter just had a serious bout of thrush ( bad on her inner lips too) and then a yeast infection rash both of which were not too bad by the time I brought her to see the doctor... He didn't say anything ...SHE IS ON SINGULAIR every day... I did suspect the asthma meds. Thank you! Good luck!

Vigilantmom3,

I never had any problems with Thrush from my Singulair. It was when I added the Advair that my problems started. It's because of the corticosteroid ingredient.

I was just diagnosed with asthma for the first time ever. I'm 31 y/o female. I just started the inhalers about a week ago. 1st albuterol but made me WAY too jumpy, so then xoponex -(levalbuterol) in nebulizer which is very similar to albuterol but it's like 70% less jitters after you take it and it lasts 4 to 6 hours. I had a steriod shot and they gave me QVAR steriod inhaler. WELL, after my first 2 days of using the steriod inhaler along with my levalbuterol/neb treatment, I started feeling raw, hoarse, very dry in the opening of my airway and down in my throat and airways. It made me feel like I couldn't get a good breath, couldn't relax my throat and breathing. I went to urgent care yesterday and they said they think I'm getting oral thrush from the steriod inhaler. JUST IN 2 DAYS of using that thing! unreal... So, I they gave me 3 pills called fluconazole 150mg tablets to take 1x daily. Just after my 1st pill I felt a LOT better the next morning. Right now I don't feel raw, horse, etc... I also took a bunch of mucinex like he said to too and I do feel a little congested but that's probably from all the expectorant meds to get this thickness out of me. I'm about to go on a lfight - wish me luck people!!! This will be my 1st trip with asthma and I'm a little scared! Where would I plug in my nebulizer if on a lfight and would they freak out on me thinking I'm gonna blow up the plane or something if I break my neb treatment??? lol.... sheesh.. I never knew how much trouble, triggers and things asthma sufferers have to avoid or go through.. I'm still not 100% I'm doing the right thing for myself as far as treatment, meds, actions, living, etc...

oh joy.. I got oral thrush yet once again from my qvar inhaler (i think that's what it's from anyway)... Had to take another 3 days of those anti-yest pills but this time the Dr gave me a mouth wash that's supposed to help get rid of yeast. It taste horrid but seems be keeping the white stuff from coming up in the back of my thraot, thank goodness!!!
I have to say, that when I feel the thrush coming on in the back on my throat, it feels weird, rawish, full, glue filled, thick as if I can't breathe from mucus plugs or something and it freaks me out a little cause I keep thinking it's asthma coming on... within 2 days of the anti-yeast pills though I cn breathe fairly normal again w/o that weird feeling in my throat.
I've only been on qvar for around 3 weeks or so and already have had 2 yeast infections in my throat even though I swish and gargled with water, then water w/50/50 peroxide, etc...
Guess I'm just a little more prone to it or something......
I've been feeling pretty good though the last couple of days asthma wise so I hope I can come off the steriod soon in another 2 weeks or so...

I've been on advair about 3 months and have been fine and this am I noticed two small tiny white spots that hurts. I have been rinsing with hydrogen peroxide, I really would like it to go away. Has anyone ever caught it early and had this work? Wondeirng if I should do that and then skip advair. Has anything like that worked for anyone? Or should I just call my dr.?

I used Advair for about two years with no problems. Then I started getting thrush. I never did anything differently. I got tired of calling the doc all the time for Diflucan. Now, when I get thrush, I quit the Advair for about a week. I'm not sure it's that good for me since I "really" abuse my albuterol during that time. I'm interested to know if the peroxide works for you. Keep us posted.

well one spot seems to be gone so I'm putting the hydrogen peroxide on the other one, I used something sterile to sort of break it open and then put on the medicine. I'm real hesitant to stop the advair in the heat wave we are having but if I have to I might.

well one spot is gone, the other seems to be hanging in. Not to be gross but I sterilized a needle, tore it and put the hydrogen peroxide and will skipped the advair tonight and probably tomorrow morning if the weather changes. Still putting hydgrogen peroxide but I think it only works if it actually gets in there. I have yet to see any other spots appear, cross your fingers! The air was awful today and one of the rare times I felt I needed the resuce inhaler I left it home. Luckily I was able to stay in the rest of the day and my breathing got better but as soon as I went out it was hard to breathe again so I did it when I got home and its in my purse for tomorrow. I got scared!

the steroids in alot of inhalers make you more susceptible to infection which makes you susceptible to normal bacteria in your mouth, thats why rinsing is so important. Since I still have one spot I am still fighting with hydrogen peroxide.

amoxicillian and all antibiotics can and do cause people to get thrush which is a yeast infection. The antibiotics kill bad bacteria in the body which is good and is why we take it BUT it also kills the GOOD bacteria in our body too which is bad because those good bacterias are what balance us out and prevents such things as yeast over growth, etc., and that's how the yeast/thrush comes on.

Were you on any antibiotics before getting thrush?
I've never had it in my life (oral thrush) till I started taking inhaled steriods (they lower your immune system, making you more prone to infection and increasing your chances of getting thrush). I tried the gargling 50/50 solution of water mixed with peroxide 2x daily which was after I did my inhaler but it didn't prevent me from getting thrush again and did not get rid of the thrush when I had it. It DID make my teeth a little whiter though but the taste - yuck!

No need to freak and think you have cancer or aids. There are several things that can cause oral thrush or yeast infections anywhere in the body. Eating too much sugar when your PH balance off could even cause yeast over growth, or even too much beer during that time. Women are more prone to yeast infections due to vaginal issues. I used to get vaginal yeast when I was a teen and took bubble baths. My Doc told me the soap was causing irritation and bringing on my yeast infections. I stopped putting bubbles in my bath and I didn't get them anymore. Now, if my partner and I have too much sex and I get irritated, raw or anything like that then I will end up with a yeast infection.

I seem to be more prone to them for some reason. I get tested for AIDS every year now for the last 14 years and am Negative. I have been tested for diabetes and am normal (i use my moms monitor a few times a day once in a while to check it out). I get a check up once a year and have not found any cancer nor have any symptoms of cancer....... So, believe me, you can get thrush/yeast without the presence of a disease.

DON'T take antibiotics for it, they will make it worse and is one of the things that cause yeast/thrush. Go to your doctor and ask for these pills called "Diflucan". He'll give you 3 pills. If you don't get generic they will cost about $10.00 a pill. Anyway, all you need are 3 of them. You should feel a big difference within 24 hours and it will be gone in 3 to 4 days (or at least it is for me). Diflucan rocks!!!!!!!

Good luck and don't worry...... :)

I tried peroxide for days and days with thrush... useless... Thrush is a pain to get rid so, I'd go to a doc and ask for "diflucan" pills. You get 3 of them and will get rid of it very quickly! I feel better within 24 hours.
I know what you mean about dry throat.. It felt a little thick like I have wet toilet paper stuck in my throat but also felt really dry/horse at the same time.
made me feel like i couldn't breathe well also which for me was the worst part of it.
I got thrush for 1st time 3 days after starting my steroid inhaler (QVAR) and thought i was having another asthma attack because of the horseness and thickness.. Make me feel like my throat was closing up. Well, it was thrush that time. I got rid of it with diflucan that time. The doc told me to use peroxide to gargle with after I did my inhalers and that would help prevent getting thrush.. WRONG. I got it yet again and did diflucan again and got rid of it right away.

This time though the doc wrote me a prescription for a huge bottle of "nistatin" swish & swallow. Nystatin is just like diflucan but it's like mouth wash that you swish around and then swallow. It prevents/cures yeast/thrush in the mouth.
At 1st I used it every time i did my steroid inhaler and then just as needed. I've only felt thrush coming on once since then and as soon as I even thought I was getting it I started the swish and swallow Nystatin stuff for a few days and it went away before it got started. For me, I first just feel a little raw and horse then within 3 to 4 days I have yeast like crazy in the throat and feel terrrrrrrrible.

I'd just tell the Dr when you go in for the Diflucan pills to also give you a good size bottle of "nystatin swish and swallow" so you don't have to keep coming back for thrush. It can be a pain going to the Dr so often.

Take care,

T.

well i stopped the flovent, i dont have asthma, its from the reflux..idk if my prob is thrush or not..its worse now than its been and it hurts real bad and is a sharp numbing pain now on the left side...the sores are all along the base of my gumline. they start way way down (or up) like where the wisdom teeth roots would be, in those 4 corners. i usually get them sometimes in one corner, and they go away in 4-6 days. now, they are in the upper left, and both bottom corners! it started upper left, and lower left, now lower right. idk if it's thrush or not, but i got nystatin swish and swallow..i took one dose earlier..my tongue is also coated white way more than normal. they sores way down in the base of the gumline are dark pink with random white lines going along the base, to the front 2 teeth almost. is this thrush? and if it is, it seems worse, esp my tongue. does it get worse at first? im worried, i just started getting the sharp numbing tingling kinda pain on the left side a little while ago. im about to go to the ER. what do ya think, thrush or something else? again i stopped the inhaler a while ago..just seeing if this could be thrush, because i have a history of a LOT of antibiotics. lmk, thanks!

I am just getting over pneumonia, and also developed a viral infection, sore throat and the insides of my mouth and tongue....i have been using flovent and albuteral....i love my diet pepsi, but my mouth hurts to much...is this thrush?

I got oral thrush. I was using Flovent. It was awful awful awful with a capital A. I felt like someone had taken a blowtorch to my mouth.

My doctor put me on tablets that dissolved in my mouth. That got it to start clearing up in a couple days.

What surprised me about thrush was how bad the pain was. Advil didn't help at all.

I totally lucked out, I had a few small spots and they gave me I think the brand name was kenalog, I had to apply it several times a day and it was kind of yucky but I'd rather have that then a full blown case of thrush.

i may not know alot about asthma yet, but i do know ive had oral thrush ofr oevr a year :3

i have it chroncially, but only becuase i dont like the treatment so i just let it come back each time.

apple cidar cvinigar, swich it in your mouth and gargle iwth it a little, you can water it down if you like, you shoudl do it once every one - three days, and rember to brush your teeth a few mintes afterwards so it doenst hurt your teeth.

dont eat anything sugary becuase thrush looove sugar, someone mentioned swishing coke in their mouth, thats liek teh worst think you can do for it  dont do that~

ive tried a few medicines, the dont work as well as apple cidar vinigar and theyre alot more expsenive. also as soon as i was finished iwth each med i tried, it just came back anyway.

the first time you use vinigar, it will feel weird and look kind of yuck becuase its litterally disolving the thrush, but check back the next day and youll see it looking so much nicer :3

I am so glad that I found this website! I'm 38 yrs old and I was diagnosed with asthma in November of 2005. My doctor prescribed advair. My first bout of thrush occured in April 2006. I was so scared, I didn't know what it was.....neither did my doctor. My mom, a retired registered nurse, told me what it was. My mom also told me that I got it from my asthama inhaler. I went back to my doctor and told him what it was and he prescribed nestatin. He also said that he never hear of someone getting thrush form an inhaler  I printed off a bunch of information off the net for him and took it to his office the next time I had to see him! He knows all about oral thrush and asthma inhalers know. Anyway, I've had two more bouts of thrush this summer (one when my doctor was on vacation and I had to go the the ER and wait about 4 hrs just to get a prescription for nestatin) It seems like no matter what I do, the thrush just keeps getting back! I was beginning to think I was some sort of freak until I found this website! I rinse (with water) before I use my inhaler; I rinse with water, mouthwash, and brush my teeth after I use my inhaler, but the thrush keeps coming back!

I think I'm going to try rinsing with half peroxide and half water......I'll also try the apple cider vinegar, and I'll make sure that I have a bottle of nestatin on hand! I'm also going to stop my advair for awhile, I think! Anyway, wish me luck!

Be real careful with the Apple Cider Vinegar. It can eat away the enamel on your teeth. Make sure you rinse well, and brush right away.

I use Advair and have some problems with thrush. A medical person suggested that after brushing, rinsing, and gargling, I swallow a couple of handfuls of water. this has helped me and I hope it might some of you.

STONEY109,
Hi, sorry for not getting back to you sooner... :-) I hope you've gotten help for your problem since you left the post here.
From what you said about white tongue + red gums with white.... It could be a combo of things such as yeast on the tongue and the red sore areas could be a range of things from yeast, oral herpes, gum abcesses, etc... You should go to a dentist to find out for sure what it is.
Here's a photo I found of a really bad yeast infection in the mouth to give you a better idea of what it looks like and if it looks like what you might have.

http://www.medicine.uiowa.edu/igec/e_learning/dentistry/photos/sec04page12g.jpg

I think it's ok to put that in here since it's just to a photo.

Good luck & try to see a dentist. If not then see a doc at a walk in clinic or even the Health Department (they might see you for free) and get a swab of the stuff in your mouth so they can check it under a microscope to tell for sure what it is and treat it for you.
