View Full Version : Heart rate during exercise

I'm 48. No regular exercise routine for several years. Have now joined Curves ( 2 months) and love it. The question is about my heart rate. I'm always off the chart. (for anyone not familiar w/ Curves, they have heart rate charts posted on the walls, based on age and a "range" of where you should be accordingly. They guide members through a 10 second heart rate check every 8 minutes. Today after my first 8 minutes, my heart rate was at 186 -- 162 the next -- and 180 the next. They emphasize members trying to maintain a rate in a more median range. If we are high, we have to stop for 5 seconds. Shouldn't my rate be going down by now? I'm usually in the high range, but today was my highest day. I know there are other factors involved (caffeine, etc.) and my resting is higher than normal. I've asked them about it several times, but I'm not really sure I"ve understood their answer. So does anyone know the scoop here?

My heart rate is always very high during exercise also. I am almost 50 and belong to a gym where I walk or try to jog the treadmill and lift weights. On the treadmill, there is a graph where you can check your heart rate. If I walk faster than 3.5 miles per hour or try to jog, my heart rate goes up to 170 bpm! What I usually do is try to maintain about 145 bpm. So I walk around 3.8 for a few minutes and then hold on the bar, which always lowers my heart. They have told me that when I get in shape it will go down. I am not very consistent with my exercise, so I guess I am not in shape yet!

Hi Cindy at leats your getting there, i cant get past 2 minutes of exercise, because i quit right away anyway

I know my heart rate also increases alot why dont you try doing a search online and find a "Heart Rate Training Calculator" and you can find your target heart rate. :bouncing: :bouncing:
