To cut a long story short, I've recently learned from my doctor that I can't run or play soccer anymore.

I'm just 23 years old and suddenly I can't do half of what I used to be capable of.

Sports was one the few things that made me feel good, if I can never again play soccer or run I don't know what I'll do. I don't know if I can go on like this, I feel so pathetic.

It is quite normal for you to be depressed about this. As with any time of loss, you will have to go through a grieving process. Try to remember in the back of your mind that it is a process, and as such it has an end.
Also, if you were so motivated with the sport that you were injured, no doubt you will find some new pursuit.

Im sorry this has happenned . No doubt it is depressing but its natural for you to feel this way. Give it a litlle time and I m sure you will eventually get on to something else or stay involved in the sport in some way .Many others have been through this kind of thing and have gone through some depression about it. Dont give up hope and try to go easy on yourself .You ll come through it. Keep in touch and let us know how your doing Mizzy

get a second and third opinion. a 23 year old with hip problems doesn't sound right to me. do a lot of research and what is exactly wrong with your hip?

Part of my depression came from not being able to play sports anymore. I quit the year where I had the varisty pitching spot in softball, which devestated me. I had lower back problems when I quit at 16 years old, so I feel your pain.

Being a dancer, I can imagine a lot of what you must be going through and my heart aches on your behalf. Have you talked to him about pilates or sports massage? It can really help with the healing of injuries, many times way beyond the scope of physio's who work with everyone - not just sportspeople.

English isn't my native language and so I can't give a proper translation to the medical jargon but basically there's a 11x12mm hole in my hip bone.

The doctor I saw has passed my information on to a specialist but her own diagnosis was that I can say goodbye to all physically demanding sports. I'm waiting to see the specialist now but I'm not very optimistic, I just fear what he or she has to say. If this really is the end of my lifestyle then I really don't know what to do.

At this point I would be prepared to do anything to be fit. I could take it if had to be without sports for a year or two but the rest of my life? that's just too cruel.

seems strange that the hole wasn't noticed before while you were still active in sports. you seem too young for a hip replacement so maybe they will try a bone graph or reinforce the space with titanium screws etc. the healing process may take some time though if any surgical procedure was to be successful. so don't fret and this isn't the end of the world.

If it's a bone problem it might be that they can do a graft, my advice is really make sure you're eating loads of calcium and go easy on any weight bearing exercise until you've seen the specialist. They'll let you know all your options.
