I am supposed to have 4 wisdom teeth out. My worries will be having it done and being Type II. I have a terrible time healing a paper cut on my finger! Also,
I need to eat every 2-3 hours so BS won't go too low.
Anyone with diabetes been through this? http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/frown.gif

Hi,
Are you having this done in the dentist office with or without anesthesia or in the hospital? You should ask to be the first patient of the day where ever you are having it done. If your blood sugar is very labile you may need you MD to consult with the dentist/oral surgeon prior to the proceedure. What medication are you on?

I am having it done by an oral surgeon (who does this
all the time). I am not on any diabetes medication,
just antidepressants. I plan to consult with
my regular doctor first before my consultatin with the oral surgeon. I have never been afraid of
any surgery, minor or major, until now. They tell me
the wisdom teeth have to come out, to prevent gum disease from progressing to eventually destroying all my teeth.

Hi again,
I work in an OR and see this surgery a lot. It is most often done in the oral surgeons office these days unless there is a medical necessity. In either case I am sure your MD will have some recomendations for the oral surgeon. A simple glucose IV would keep your BS at a normal range during the surgery if that is necessary.
As for healing, have you any experience with homeopathy? It is pretty safe because the preparations are very dilute. Arnica can be purchaced at most health food stores as a tablet that you disolve under you tongue. It decreases bruising and increases healing. It is good to take before and after surgery with no side effects that I have ever heard of. That is what I would use and of course instructions I am sure the oral surgeon will give to cleanse you mouth after surery.
Just let your MD know of your concerns and questions. He or She should be able to answer your questions and make you feel more comfortable and prepare you for your surgery. Good luck.

I had my wisdom teeth out about 30 years ago, after I'd been diabetic for maybe 7-8 years. Had no problem whatsoever, but I do know what you mean about paper cuts etc. I also had open-heart surgery a few years ago, a triple cardiac by-pass, with a vein harvested from my leg, so I was cut open from neck to navel and knee to ankle. I healed without any problem whatsoever, in very short order, and my opinion is that the speed and smoothness of healing depends largely on the stability of your blood glucose levels and very little else. If you go up and down a lot, or are high much of the time, healing will be slower and you will be more prone to infections.
